This place doesn't look much from outside but what a gem it is. The lasagne and bolognese were outstanding and the service was wonderful. There are many rivals to this restaurant nearby but they will charge two ce the price and deliver a quarter of...the taste and fun. Thanks to all for a beautiful quick meal
Aldo's has been a soho staple for decades. Thank goodness it survives! Very cheap eat cheerful, and good to while away some time or have a good meal before theatre. Have had many good evenings out here. This is a very traditional Italian. Nothing...changes. That is the selling point! Places like these are few and far between in Soho now that big business swallows up everything else. Many people start to like pretentious noisy places and so places like Aldo's are lost in the crowd. This is like the sort of Italian you would expect on a small street in Italy tucked away and lost, but to a few locals. Of course that does mean that the food, and service can be unrefined, but it is traditional! If you want a cosy, quick, tasty and very inexpensive meal and a blast from the past go to Aldo's. Thank you Papa Aldo for being a staple part of the furniture as well. And long may this place remain, as the rest of Soho gets taken oven by chains galore.
I've lived in London my whole life and Soho is one of the best spots for trying out nice independent places with good food and good value. Unfortunately after trying this place for the first time I ended up feeling a bit resentful that I...hadn't just gone to one of my nearby favourites that I'm more familiar with. First impressions of this place were good with a nice old school Italian decor, but everything aside from that made the visit pretty unpleasant. Upon arrival the waiter bizarrely tried to get all the girls on our table to kiss his neck and when they weren't keen he became hostile and distant and decided to be was rude to our table from that point in. We ordered some bruschetta and garlic bread to start. These took nearly an hour to arrive and the garlic bread was pretty much inedible and tasted spicy with how strong it was. The mains were fine, but pretty simple and nothing special. We had some wine which was ok, but my friends asked for some glasses of water on several occasions and this never turned up. When they queried this at the end of the meal the waiter said well if you wanted water you could have gone to the loos downstairs and got some out the tap'. I could see from the tables around us that a lot of the other guests were a bit uncomfortable with the waiters mix of haphazardness and over familiarity and they also seemed to leave the majority of their starters so I'm guessing their food wasn't up to scratch either. In short, don't bother going here and check out any of the other great cheap eats on Greek Street or Frith Street that are actually worth their salt.
The food tasted good and the welcome was warm. The minestrone was very poor, watery vegetable soup. The main courses had far too much salt in. The sea food risotto was in a very runny sauce with chilli flakes making it difficult to taste the...sea food. The risotto had king prawns, squid and mussels which looked fantastic. The sad thing was that the whole lot reappeared about later. We weren't offered desert or coffee. One couple close to us had sets of desserts delivered and another couple were brought desserts after their starters. Chaotic might be the right word.
