It does not embody the quiet and relaxed atmosphere traditionally associated with a speakeasy. It seems that people in Canberra may have a skewed idea of what a speakeasy truly is.
What a great bar.... Once you manage to find it!. This is a whiskey lover's dream.... The list of single malts is extensive and fairly priced. Order at the bar. Can get busy so consider booking in advance. Great espresso martini, sprinkled with grated nutmeg!
Stumbled across this bar and loved it so much we visited 3 times while we were staying in Canberra. Bit hard to find but the surprise you get when you open the door is amazing really unexpected. Jazz sessions were really entertaining and the staff were very attentive. Huge drink menu but some of them were unrealistically expensive. Cocktails were lovely but the ambience and the vibe of this place makes it a must visit.
The bar has a nice atmosphere, with dim lighting and a bustling crowd. However, this can be a downside as it can get very busy, especially on Sundays when patrons are ordering cocktails. This may result in a long wait to be served and for your drinks to arrive. If you have a gluten intolerance, it's best to look for another place to eat, as the only option on the menu for coeliacs is a cold charcuterie board with crackers.
My partner and I went to this bar for an after dinner cocktail. We ordered a cocktail each and we both agreed they were the worst cocktails of our lives. They tasted unbelievably strong but not a good way, they both had an extremely grim taste and we couldn’t have more than a few sips and neither of us are fussy drinkers. The old fashioned could be likened to cough syrup. After paying $25 each we decided to tell the waiter but unfortunately the staff told us we had to order the same drink again and we couldn’t be given a different drink as a replacement. We also got told that they couldn’t bring over the replacements to our table, we’d have to go and queue up at the bar again for the second time. Not wanting to wait around to try some more dodgy cocktails we decided to leave the bar and cocktails full on the table. Worst cocktail bar experience ever!
