Interesting experience. The food is 5 stars. Getting the food highly inefficient and we almost left. Any efficiency study will tell you that 1 line and sending out the order to the crew will be faster every time. It was almost like watching 6 separate kitchens work again one another. The carnitas, asada, and stripe were so good. Raise the prices by $1 and get the kitchen to work together and you could see a great benefit to what you have started. Props to the kitchen crew.
What's there not to like about this place? Good food Check Fast service Check Great prices Check Friendly staff Check Of all the things on the menu, my favorite is the taco de adobada. They shave the meat off the trompo right in front of you. Don't skimp on the toppings and get the cream sauce. If you see a long line, don't worry. The lines move quickly. This is a must stop for me whenever I'm in San Diego.
Ahhh, the famous Tacos El Gordo slaps! The OG location on Broadway is where I always come for good tacos and is worth the drive. When you walk in, it's similar to a cafeteria style where you wait in a line for the tacos you want and let them know how much you want. After you grab your fill, you pay at the end where there are two registers. There's plenty of seating. My favorite tacos are the Lengua (Beef Tongue Tacos), Cabeza (Beef Head Tacos), Adobada (Spiced Pork Tacos). They're famous for their Adobada which I always ask for some pineapple to go with it. All these types above are the best, so flavorful, juicy. I also like snacking on the mini radish slices and adding lime to my tacos (grab at the self serve station next to the register). Asking for grilled onions is a good addition as well and their avocado/lime light green sauce is immaculate on the tacos. There are times I feel like the quality can be inconsistent, but even at the less good times, the tacos are still delicious and worth going for. Parking is hit or miss (they have a lot) but we've usually found parking. Overall, a must try in San Diego.
The place drips in authenticity, not kitschy but functional. Counter service can be kind of slow depending on who 's ahead of you on one of the several lines Tacos for thirty ... , and you may need to hit multiple line depending on what you are ordering, but everything was very tasty and prepared right in front of you. Also, a great place to go if you are looking for somewhat more exotic meats like tongue and tripe. Fountains with normal sodas, but also ones more popular south of the border. Not fancy or romantic, but filling and flavorful.
