We came here due to being fairly local and someone informed us that they had enjoyed a nice lunch! However the service was slow and the food was average at best! The prices are inflated and it’s really not worth paying the extra!! We had...an issue with cutlery and were left starting our main meals with a fork and spoon! The food wasn’t hot when it came out so by the time we had got the correct cutlery our food was cold. The food went back to the kitchen and was Microwaved which made the veg hard and taste raw. Everything else ended up tasting like a microwaved roast dinner meal and not a good one !! We complained and said it was unacceptable and no one cared or even tried to resolve. Reading reviews it seems a general running trend with poor food and if anyone questions it they’re accused of trying to get a free meal !! Personally I’d rather of gave the food back and my money and gone somewhere else! I won’t be going back !
Only ten minutes away from where we live, but it took us more than two years before we discovered this hidden gem. A pub with true character situated in picture perfect surroundings. The staff was very friendly, food was good and today will for sure...not be our last visit. Combine the visit with a walk along Shardeloes and the pint will be well deserved.
We had lunch in the Red Lion after trying the other pub in the village who unfortunately were not serving that day. The food here is very good value; we had crab salad, smoked salmon salad and burger and chips plus drinks for around £40....The salads had a good portion of fish with a large lettuce/ cucumber/ tomato type salad. So nothing special but fresh and great for the cost. The burger was slightly disappointing; the menu stated home made but it did not taste good enough to deserve that claim. The garden is amazing with a large fish pond and plenty of seating. Given the 4* review because of the value and garden. Would be a good place for families to eat.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! As someone who has worked in catering and hospitality for many years and seen both the good and bad sides of the industry, I was absolutely stunned by the experience we had at The Red Lion in Little Missenden today. Four...of us decided to stop here for a midweek lunch, and though we were not expecting Michelin star food or service, what was about to come our way would even have shocked Gordon Ramsey on Kitchen Nightmares. After ordering a beer (which was actually quite pleasant) from a very polite and nice barmaid, we had high hopes for the food. The food that we were served was at best poor, the portions were insultingly small, and cooked by a chef who is either very inexperienced or who does not take any pride in their work. One of my friends decided to go to the bar straight away and politely inform the staff of his disappointment with the food. After debating with the barman and getting nowhere, the barman brought out the chef to discuss. My friend again explained his issues and unbelievably the chef responded with That's your problem, not mine !!! My friend decided to cut his losses and eat the Cod fillet and chips, which he discovered to be far from fresh. The polite barmaid cleared our table and asked how everything was. We again explained our issues and she was apologetic, but that didn't make our experience any better. As we were leaving, and in front of other guests, we heard someone say (from a guy wearing a Red Lion shirt and who we believe to be the manager of the pub) No free lunch here My friend was then told Have a F-ing shave before you come for lunch !! Never have I witnessed such appalling behaviour from someone working in hospitality. If anyone reading this is considering a career in this industry then you should definitely go here to see how not to serve food and speak to your guests. After reading other reviews it would appear this is not a one off, and the management and staff regularly speak to guests in this way. If this is their standard when speaking to guests, which is simple and doesn't cost a penny, then it is terrifying to think of the standards they employ behind the scenes with regards to food hygiene. Safe to say we will not be returning here and I would strongly advise anyone else to avoid it.
