Fresh cuts of seafood and fish. The toro literally melted in my mouth. I really enjoyed the salmon, tuna, squid and eel nigiri. The pairs consist of a unique chef inspired nigiri along with a plain nigiri. Please see the photos for all the things we ordered. We went all out. What an amazing experience for my palate! definitely will be back! Oh, and our waitress was A M A Z I N G! She knew every little detail about Chef Mackus Menu and was so kind!
This restaurant review will not address the quality of the food, but the experience was far from perfect. The atmosphere seemed promising at first and the staff appeared friendly during restaurant week with my friends. However, there was a major mishap when our server accidentally spilled a jar of pumpkin soup all over my friend. While mistakes can happen, the proper response would have been to clean up the mess and apologize promptly. Instead, we were ignored until we had to request wet wipes and were offered a dessert as compensation. This was not the way to handle the situation, both physically and with courtesy. Every diner expects to have a mistake-free experience at a restaurant, but it's important to know how to rectify any errors that do occur. Unfortunately, the manager did not handle the situation effectively, and it was disappointing to see that the owner may be overpaying for their services. As a result of this incident, the review is walking away feeling disappointed and will not be returning to this establishment.
I 've had a fair amount of sushi and Japanese food in Chicago as well as other cities. However, we decided to come to Macku to try their omakase since we couldn 't pass up on their $25 off deal on Thursdays. They offer a few different types of omakase starting at $75 per person. I don 't remember exactly what each one was called but there was a nigiri, the standard, signature series/chef 's special, and an unlimited option. We went with the signature, which was $125 per person (ended up being $100 with the discount). Let me say that it 's definitely not your traditional omakase, it 's a bit more fusion-y. Unfortunately we were seated at a table so we weren 't able to see the chef prepare each course. As for the food, presentation wins over taste. Everything came out beautifully prepared but I truly only enjoyed maybe 3 out of the 7 courses. After spending $300 for our meal drinks, we weren 't really blown away and felt like something was missing. We tried the Japanese white strawberry for dessert, which was probably the highlight of our meal but also came with a whopping price tag for a single strawberry. Makes sense though since we were informed that it is very rare and only about 10% of these milky white berries effectively grow to size. Aside from the food, the service was outstanding. Our waitress, Joyce, was really engaging knowledgeable about the menu and did an amazing job explaining each course.
Never disappointed. Best quality equal to Katsu (retired). Great flavors from fresh seafood to savory and sweet dishes! Bottle service is great imho. Japanese whiskey, many varieties. Open for omakase by appointment only.
I usually love this place but tonight it was unacceptable. You can see how my food came when it was delivered. They were not in shape. I would say this is not the first time happen but I chose to ignore it if I can still eat them but this time is the worst. My sashimi order was all together : I also feel sick when I ate the salmon sashimi. I had it before it was delicious but not tonight. The sushi rice doesn't taste the same. The food tonight was disappointed me so much.
