Well worth a detour if you're anywhere near Chars. Friendly helpful service and a good Madagascan food.
The restaurant is located in the town of Chars, the center of an important wheat-growing region north of Paris known as the Vexin. The Moulin de Chars supplies specialty flours to over 400 bakeries. Most are in Paris, but the company exports bread flour to clients in Canada, Sweden and Japan. If you buy a baguette in Paris, chances are it was made with flour from the Moulin de Chars. On August 10, 2013, a friend and I took a scenic 12-kilometer walk starting and finishing at Chars, passing by a 5,000-year old megalithic menhir and a 17th century chateau. When we arrived back in Chars, we stopped for lunch at the Café-Restaurant de la Gare, reopened in July 2013 under new management after being closed for two years. The Café-Restaurant de la Gare is a pleasant place to enjoy French home cooking and it’s only a minute’s walk from the train station in Chars. The two-course prix-fixe lunch [starter+main course or main course+dessert] is a reasonable €14.50. Between the two of us, we had: a copious assortment of cold cuts; "tian provençal," which is a gratinée of thinly sliced vegetables, mainly eggplant, tomatoes and zucchini; "escalope de poulet normande," which is breast of chicken in a sauce of cream and mushrooms served with home-made French fries; and "café gourmand," espresso coffee accompanied by several tiny pastries. While my freind had wine, I preferred a refreshing draft ale, a Belgian Tongerlo, just the thing to slake your thirst on a hot August day..Service was prompt and friendly, and the outdoor dining area is spacious.
