In terms of actually grocery shopping here, the prices are a bit up there, but the offerings are very unique and you won?t be able to find a lot of their international products at any other grocery stores. I hope Food of All Nations is here to stay as a Charlottesville staple.
It's an average grocery store, similar to a co-op, with a small selection of international items. I noticed a good number of British imports, some common Asian foods, and a few Middle Eastern products. However, there wasn't much representation from regions like Africa or Eastern Europe. The variety they offered was quite limited. I had hoped to find items like cassava, Okinawan sweet potatoes, goat meat, beef heart, a wider range of Hispanic foods, and more kefir options that aren't available at my usual local store.
This establishment isn't aimed at the average consumer, as evidenced by the absence of EBT payment options and the steep prices. Are you prepared to spend $3.50 for a small container of sour cream? If so, this is the place for you. How about $20 per pound for steak? You’ll find that here, too. This store caters to left-leaning academics and yuppies who seem willing to pay excessive amounts for the sake of social status—purchasing obscure craft sodas and 'organic' products while subtly distancing themselves from those with lower incomes.
It's great to have a store like this in the area, but when I compared common items that aren't international with other grocery stores, I found they are significantly overpriced!
Really get behind local products! SO thankful to this beautiful store!
