When I am in this area I have my morning coffee here every day and always get a very warm welcome despite my awful French and inability to understand the bill if it is not written down. I have eaten here a couple of times over the years and the food is very good and the portions huge! Sitting outside this restaurant and watching the sun go down is kind of what France is all about.

Located along the main avenue of the quaint town of Barbotan, Marie Clare operates L'Estanquet, a simple restaurant with exceptional food. Open from 8 am until 7pm, plan your breakfast, lunch, or take out menu from the fine selection of well prepared meals made from local produce and nearby farms. During the warm months enjoy patio dining, with the hustle and bustle of the market surroundings on Wednesdays. You won't be disappointed.

We had a lovely Sunday lunch at this very friendly and welcoming little restaurant in the charming town of Barbotan les Thermes in the Gers department. It was market day and all the tables inside were taken, so we sat in the terrace at the front of the restaurant. We didn't have any starters, but were absolutely delighted with our choice of main courses, which were Rump Steak in a mustard sauce (there was a choice of 3 sauces), green salad and home-made chips for my husband and I had the Sole with king prawns served with mashed potatoes in a lovely pink sauce. For dessert I had the utterly delicious Café Gourmand, which is served with a selection of small and light sample puddings and which I would recommend to anybody. My husband just had a coffee. All this was washed down with a jug of their local white wine, which we also enjoyed very much. A jug of water was also provided and this was complimentary, as well as the bread. The bill only came to 33 euros, making it excellent value for money. We are definitely coming back here again.

A popular and friendly central restaurant which fills quickly on market days. Advisable to book to avoid disappointment. We were squeezed in as a favour and treated well. Food is reliable and reasonable. Wines good. Atmosphere is lively as it is at the heart of the smart town with its spa visitors.
