We came across this restaurant when we first arrived in Canberra because of it's location to where we were staying. There are a whole host of eateries in this precinct and we found ourselves drawn to this place, as we love all things Asia - in particular, the cuisine. We chose to sit in the outside seating area where all of the sizzling hot plates are located. My first impression really resonates with me still now (even though I am writing this review a month after our dining experience). The chairs are not particularly comfortable and the tables all have the obligatory wobble, which as much as it is annoying, you can deal with. What I can not accept is that most of the outdoor tables are encrusted with bird faeces. It is absolutely appalling and needs to be rectified immediately. On the night in question, we were lucky enough to nab just the wobbly table and had a look over the menu. There is plenty to choose from and options to create your own. We must have chosen very wisely (having read some other reviews) as our meals were well cooked and were what we expected. The serving size was also quite generous and very reasonably priced. The service was definitely a let down, with a lengthy wait between our entree and main; and having to ask the waitress to clear the table twenty minutes after completing our meal, is something I haven't had to do for a very long time. I had to ask for a bottle of water for the table several times and I swear she was rolling her eyes at me for bothering her. I must stress, having worked in both retail and hospitality, I genuinely make an effort to be polite and cheery when communicating with other retail and hospitality workers as I know first hand what it is like being on the receiving end of surly or aggressive behaviour - so I can assure you in this instance, it was a 'them problem' not a 'me problem'.So, I'm a touch conflicted with this restaurant. The meal was tasty and cheap, but the service and cleanliness was awful. Given that there are so many other eateries in this area, it begs the question: Would I eat here again? Probably not.
Not sure why it is listed as "Aasia Sizzle Bento". Seems to be just "Sizzle Bento".Could not find it in time on trip advisor on this occasion trying to get a quick dinner before the NYE fireworks. Understandably fairly busy on NYE and the food took 30-40 minutes to arrive. The drinks taking nearly as long hard to understand. The adjoining table gave up on one of their meals. The agedashi tofu was cold and the sauce totally unpalatable. Other meals were not much better, hard to identify what was in the sushi rolls. I left thinking that I would be grateful not to get sick. Does Canberra have a similar food safety assessment system as NSW?On the bright side the staff were friendly and apologetic.Fortunately we were all ok but had a very poor sleep and the food was likely a contributing factor.
I arrived in Canberra and wanted a quick take away dinner. I had a seaweed salad and salmon sushi. I have eaten a lot of sushi over the years but this was one of the worst… the fish was smelly and the rice had an akward tatste to it. The seaweed salad lacked sauce and flavor.
There are better places to eat Japanese is Canberra, there must be.The food was only so-so, the service was poor, the staff unfriendly, and I would go so far to say disinterested. Décor is average, and didn't look all that clean.Find somewhere else to eat, give this a miss.
