My cousin brought me here while I was on business in calgary. it wasn't quite sure what you expected to drive and look for older homes. to my surprise, this old converted house was a British pub. somehow reminded me of finding a secret. just talk. great service of maria! I found the price of a pint somewhat higher than normal, but it was worth it.
On a bitterly cold Calgary weekday, we had to venture out for errands. We stopped in to the Dog and Duck for lunch. Several other hardy souls were there and it seemed like they were regulars. There’s lots of home style food on the menu...including liver and onions, Irish Stew, bangers and mash, bacon wrapped meatloaf, shepherds pie. My lunch was ok, side salad with sad wilted greens and Montreal smoked meat sandwich. DH had bangers and mash and was very happy. Shared sticky toffee pudding for dessert was really good. The restaurant is an old house with original features kept. It’s not fancy and it is not wheelchair accessible at all. Steps to enter the building, several steps up to the dining room, several steps downstairs to the washroom and pool table room. There are 8 parking stalls to the east of the building and plenty of 2 hour free street parking alongside. We’ll be back.
I was a little hesitant about trying the Dog and Duck based on the mixed reviews. In fact, a friend who used to work in the area several years back gave it a resounding thumbs down. However, I noted that the mediocre and bad reviews...go back several years and that the reviews from the past two years have all been very good to excellent, Now, when we go out, we face a couple of challenges. My wife is allergic to shellfish and she needs to avoid anything fried in the same oil as calamari, for instance. My son is gluten intolerant. So, our restaurant forays start by asking about shellfish and about gluten free options. The good news is that the Dog does not do calamari, so all fried foods are on the table and that they do offer gluten free options. The Dog is an old style British pub. The other good news is that the Dog offers a variety of draught beers that we really like, Kilkenny and Innis Gunn, as well as a great house beer, the D D Light. My wife had the cod fish chips, I had the liver and onions and my son had the bangers and mash. All food was excellent, at least 4 stars (my wife loved the fish). There are so many other options to try here, so we will be back. Service was attentive and friendly, just the right amount. The bill total, before tip, for the three of us was $82. The one thing I noted is that this is in an old house with lots of stairs to get in and around and to the washrooms, so anyone with a walking impediment would have a hard time here.
The Dog and Duck watering hole is truly a 'down home ' pub with a very diverse selection of beers and a British 'homey ' type food menu. Food is good, service is excellent (Kayla) and the 'little old house ' is set up well to reflect the...true nature of a British pub. It you want a simple, easy place to enjoy a good beer and simple good food then go visit.
