My go to Greek restaurant is located in the NE and pretty far away for a casual drop in meal, so I was pleased to see that Plaka, a few minutes away from home, is getting good reviews here. So, one day in late July, my son and I decided to give this place a try.Located in a strip mall area of a large retail complex around Shawnessy, we finally found the restaurant after some trial and error and one fist waved at us in anger by a driver who didn't want to yield right of way.The place is rather small, but we were there early enough that we were immediately seated and water placed on our table. We ordered a feta Saganaki as an appetizer. this was a feta cheese enveloped in phyllo pastry and baked with a honey sauce. Tasty but not outstanding.. I think that the regular Saganaki would be a better choice.I had the Kleftiko, roast lamb with potatoes and vegetables, very good and a large enough portion that my son took half of it home with him. My son had tee Gemisti Kota, chicken stuffed with spinach. This dish was a little underwhelming, two small pieces of chicken (a very small breast cut into halves) and stuffed with a bland spinach concoction and covered with a bland tomato sauce that tasted like it came out of a can.I had a glass of the house red wine, ok, and went well with the lamb. For dessert, we shared a Bougatsa, custard in phyllo pastry, an interesting and tasty option.I rather liked my meal, my son was unimpressed with his, so maybe I am stretching this overall rating to a 4, probably a 3.5 would be a better score. The bill, before tip, was $80.
Love Greek food! My husband's kleftiko was incredible. My lamb souvlaki was on the tough side. The green beans were overdone. Good selection of Greek wines by the glass. Sadly they forgot our Greek salad and it took two tries to get it removed from the bill.
It is difficult to find anything authentic in Calgary in terms of Greek food. I was told about Plaka Greek Taverna and I can't get enough of the Dolmades, the Saganaki (OPA), and the greek wine. The service is so personable, and yes Tony and Panayiotis are the real deal! Greece was my favourite country of the 40 I have visited so finding food so authentic in Calgary makes me so happy! Definately worth the drive.
Really good Greek dishes. Friendly atmosphere, tasty and affordable.Highly recommended for those longing authentic Greek flavours.or those who are new to Greek food, a nice intro. Good Greek cocktail selection. Have an ouzo cocktail, get in the right mood.! Nice selection of music too.
