Went with a friend and my kids. Two of which had never eaten sushi and walked away lovers. We all shared several dishes but our favourite was of course the spicy chicken udon. So glad we found this place.
Chef Francis Tam is there every day making his delicious sushi. The Lunch Specials are the best and the best value. For $14.00 you get Miso Soup, Salad, Rice, and a choice of 3 different items from a nice list which includes Sushi, Sashimi, and a 3rd entree which I usually chose as Teriyaki Chicken. It is hidden in the Devinish Building on 17th Ave and 8th St SW. The entrance is around back on 16th Ave.Dinner is also a treat and sooner rather than later I am going to pony up for the Steak and the Mango Scallop Roll!
Went there with my boyfriend two days ago. It was after 9 pm and as we entered the manager said "we close at 10pm". Normally, I would not see this as a problem, she was not particularly polite about it, we felt unwanted. Beer on special was flat, food was below average. It their defence sushi in Calgary is not very good, but I would definitely avoid Fuji yama. We sat at dirty table, and by dirty I mean it was a sticky table set up for new customers with napkins etc. My soya sauce plate was not washed properly, come on! Seriously!
This place had the most INCREDIBLE sushi we have ever tasted in our life. (And we spent a month traveling in Japan and ate lots of sushi). We had trouble finding the entrance to this hotel... but the entrance is at the back of the building. The atmosphere of the hotel is quiet, peaceful and very reminiscent of Japan. The server was friendly and attentive. And the dishes were absolutely to die for. Whoever left a review saying this was a Hidden Gem wasn't lying. You definitely have to come and eat at this place. It's not cheap, but it is worth it.
