Taste Of China Restaurant - Cairns

Nice food, nice location. Very convinience for family. Will be back shortly. A bit expensive but it cairns

If you are looking for a nice Cantonese Chinese meal, Taste of China Restaurant will fill the bill...just be prepared to enjoy a leisurely experience. After almost two weeks traveling parts of Australia and enjoying some fine restaurants and good local food, it was high time for some chinese. The options in the tourist area of Cairns were not numerous...strip malls, fast food takeout, etc. It seemed like Taste of China might be a possible option. Our first dinner in Cairns was at RSL and was, as usual, very good. It was our second night that we opted for the Taste of China. The restaurant, although not elegant, was clean, spacious and nicely appointed. The staff were inviting, helpful and friendly. Even the owner and manager carried on short discourses with us throughout the evening. Although we ordered normal items off the menu for "family style" sharing, we did make some minor substitutions and additions for the vegetables, sauces, etc. Even though the service for us was attentive, the delivery from the kitchen was slow. It is not customary for dishes in a chinese restaurant to come sporadically unless there is a problem with staffing in the kitchen. My father would have gone into the kitchen to see who the cooks were. I did not, but my guess is that they were not well staffed. But the food, when it arrived, was very good. We just enjoyed our wine, the food and the moment. We only stayed another three nights in Cairns and had dinner once in our Hilton hotel, once at Ochre but returned once again to Taste of China! As an aside, after now reading some of the other TA comments, we cannot speak to their Yum Cha/Dim Sum because we did not experience it.

If this wasn't the worst service I've ever had, it was a close second. The night was saved by great food. If you like Chinese, this is great, good location, nice restaurant and terrific food...just be patient.

We went for dinner ,the waited 45 minutes for entree and it wasn't even busy.I had crispy beef,which was so sweet,and vegetarian fried rice which tasted burnt .

We ordered a braised beef brisket and a stirred fried tung choi with preserved bean curd.The beef dish was great quality. Good size, and great flavour. Beef and the turnip were soft but texture was intact. Sauce was plentiful but not watery. The tung choi was a disappointment. The sauce was glue-ey, and the vege was nit hot or cooked. The vege was tough too. Service was good. The male manager was friendly and helpful.Price was not cheap but not unreasonable by Cairn standard.
