Mercado Madero - Cahuita

BEST TORTILLAS TO BRING BACK HOME! There is a tortillaria attached to this mall (outside on the right of the entrance) with CHEAP cheap cheap tortillas. We purchased many kilos of tortillas de harina y maiz (four and corn). They are so soft and fresh! Still warm in the bag. They do not speak english, so be prepared to translate your order and write down the cost. Great way to work on your Spanish numbers and get amazing authentic food in the process.

I've been to bigger and better markets in South America and I'm sure there are bigger and better markets in Mexico. This is a friendly local market with the usual crowd: older ladies hawking wares, several stands selling licuados, meat and fish vendors, one snack/sweets shop with spices, and several miscellaneous vendors selling everything from children's guitars to huaraches. But nothing held my interest here, and I left empty handed other than a papaya licuado. Near the entrance of the market is a food court of sorts with several vendors selling traditional meals. It was a good place to stop for chilaquiles and menudo.

Well this farmers market does have some souvenirs, clothes, T-shirts and stuff for tourists it is mostly food, groceries, and all kinds of miscellaneous stuff sold by locals. I did not put pictures up of the meat market section. I don't recommend you buy your meat there, but there are some fresh fish for sale. If you want a glimpse of local culture, this is it.
