Was very excited to eat steak in Argentina and wasn't disappointed. Our waiter was wonderful and patient with us while we looked up unknown words on the menu. Salads are prepared fresh from a fruit and vegetable market type set up in the back of the restaurant. Went to a more expensive, "fancier" steak restaurant later in the week and the food here beat it hands down!!
This is a restaurant that is value for money, excellent food served by knowledgable staff. My must visit place every time I'm in Buenos Aires.
A steak/BBQ place then gets packed by 10. This place is a non-smoking restaurant for a couple of hours, but it turns into a bar after dinner. You can tell when dinner is over when the ashtrays come out. I ate and partied with 5 Argentinians for a good part of the night and early morning. The place is a must do if you ever go to BA.
On Thursdays El Corralón is the coolest possible place to be. You'll most likely find stars of stage and screen, famous musicians, and those special people who are just famous for being famous. The owner knows them all and they come for the fabulous traditional food as well as the midnight madness. The music (lots of Cumbia!) is cranked up around midnight and people dance in the aisles, on the tables, and occasionally a real star might decide to perform stnading on a speaker just for fun! The papparazzi will indicate who you should be photographing if you don't know the scene. One reviewer on this site said that Argentinians don't eat until after 8. Give me a break! If you go to a restaurant before 10.30 you are a nutbar and you will be just finishing as the people who know what's up are arriving. Get with the programme! Eat your merienda between 5 and 7, and go out for some amazing food and real fun and the right time. People take their kids out for dinner at 11 p.m. on school nights, so if you are a visiting foreigner and insist on eating at 7 p.m. you will not learn a thing about the cuisine here. If you have Argentine friends, invite them and they will point out the celebrities. One caution: smoking is allowed. Most people go outside to smoke, and it is completely illegal (not to mention offensive) under law 1799 to have people smoking, but the owner stands up by the sound system and smokes himself, so what can you expect? Just be forewarned. It's one of those things that makes you wonder if Argentina is really striving to be third world.
