Hotel Capsa - Bucharest

I was very disapointed two times a Dobos cake very old with butter and some hard plates, second L'amour du chocolate with some chocolate cream and jam. I'm not coming back at all.

This is a beautiful little place to get a cup of coffee and maybe a little sweet snack. It is small and cozy and the service was friendly. A beautiful place to stop when in the area.

When I was very young, my mother bought me a cake. I was often in Bucharest and find very good places for good cakes this visit I decided to visit the legend and I was very dismayed I was really sad! You don't know to treat customers, the coffin is served in plastic glass and the cake I taste was really bad! You are in a new place where you can drink coffe- Bulevardul Nicolae Balcescu 31 Bucharest

I feel a bit guilty about posting such a scathing review especially as the staff were very friendly. So I’ll give it a review, but not before running through its history: this will give you some idea as to why it has fallen from grace. If you just want the summary, skip all the fluff until the last paragraph the review! ITS HEYDAY Casa Capsa’s Coffee House “Cofeitaria” attracted Romania’s best writers, artists and actors when it was first established in the 1890s. At the height of its glory, and following the fashion of the time, it was renowned for its French inspired confectionary. ITS DECLINE Towards the end of the First World War the capital fell into the hands of the Kingdom of Bulgaria. Romania’s captors had no interest in maintaining the Cofeitaria and it, along with the hotel, unfortunately fell into a state of dilapidation and disrepair. There was no money available to restore this Romanian emblem to what it had been pre war, and so it was left to struggle along as best it could COMMUNISM The Romanian Communist Party that took over in 1948 closed Capsa and re baptised it “Bucharest Restaurant” until 1984 when it was allowed to re claim its name. But by this point, far too much time had passed by for it to keep up with its surroundings and modernisation NOWADAYS Review! You’ll see from other travellers’ pictures that the hotel is in need of a gigantic makeover/refurb. The facade is still lovely and some of the interior has character, but it’s no luxury hotel. It’s worth a look in as you really do feel like you’re in a time capsule, but that’s about it. We had coffee and cake here the coffee and teas were fine but all the cakes we tried were really awful and old fashioned. Even the waiters are wearing old fashioned uniforms. Time has moved on, but the Capsa, to its detriment, has not. A shame.

You order sugar free (they advertise that they have candy) and get something else that brings you to the hospital. No excuses, no repair. The prices are also high for regular products, the special even higher and the quality does not fit. And customer service is miserable. So many better opportunities in this city and a shame for a tradition went very wrong.
