The place quickly filled up on a Thursday night and the aroma of the menu items going to neighboring tables was enticing. We were a party of (6) and very much enjoyed all of our choices. I opted for a very simple chicken kebab. It was amazing how this simple item had so much flavor. We had all (3) rice options between us. The freshly made bread is worth the trip alone. Shepard salad is good but I have to admit I prefer Silk Road! Also heading back to Silk Road to compare the soup. All in all- a solid menu and service.
What a fabulous meal and a cozy spot in a quieter strip mall tucked away in the corner that' it's easy to miss it . Venture inside and you be impressed with the decor and dimly lit eclectic ambience. It's not a huge place but perfect for a cozy evening or a family dinner. Weekends gets busy so make a reservation. Easy to get in and out with ample parking. They are a BYOB place so carry your Wine or Beer. Their service is impeccable,. As soon as you are seated they bring the soup followed by the shepherds salad . Both are well seasoned and a perfect start to your meal. Over the last couple of months I've been here twice which clearly shows how much I like their food . Chicken Kofta no words to describe Oooooook la la Chicken kabob Oh my god ! How can they can cook something so tender and make it taste so good Salmon kabab another beauty to look at and equally tasty to eat. Lamb chops was tender and well seasoned Kidayif like a little birds nest just on the sweeter side . Slight crunchy and soft with the right amount of sweetness. A first for me and I liked it ! Baklava Classic dessert perfected . Don't missi it Chocolate baklava a tad sweeter than regular Baklava but it grows on you and I ended up licking my fork . The tri colored rice choice gave us the opportunity to taste all three and the flavors were a balance of sweet savory and mellow . My favorite es star green rice . This a a gem in a strip mall and could easily be missed . If you like Afghani/ Mediterranean kind of food , make sure to try Hills of Herat.
Always a wonderful experience dining here They are friendly, hospitable and ambience is great. Very neat and clean too. First individual salad, lentil soup and Nan bread is served . Lemme tell you they alone are worth visiting . We ordered Mantua and it was perfect. We had Herat combo with kaboli rice chefs kiss Chicken kofte with naringe so tender and delicately flavored Chicken kebob with zamrud again delicious. Also must have is green tea , it's digestive and fragrant. Packed every grain of leftover to eat tomorrow We've been here at least 20 times now
Impressed with owner who kept checking on us! Warm inviting interior. Bread was great. Lentil soup was warm and comforting. Enjoyed my lamb dish. Finished off with rice pudding.
Best afghani food I have ever had, hands down. I don't know what I'll do if I ever move out of NJ but that's a future problem. One thing that makes Hills of Herat standout is the staff. You can tell that the owners put their heart and soul into the food and establishment. The quality is truly unmatched along with the flavors. I've gone for almost every occasion and also no occasion. The restaurant has a very classy, elegant ambiance that makes you feel at home. Onto the food if you eat meat, the filet mignon is truly the best item on the menu (in my not so humble opinion). I mean, everything else is incredible too but bear with me LOL. Favorite appetizers include: hummus (they have truly ruined all other hummus for me), falafel (which I don't even normally like), and their mantu chefs kiss . Each entree also comes with a mixed salad and lentil soup. The meal just feels so perfectly complete. Dessert their firni is so good but the best way to wrap up your meal is the shir chai. It feels like a warm hug that you didn't know you needed. I have eaten here/gotten takeout too many times to count and I'LL NEVER STOP. If you've gotten this far, I hope you get in your car and do what you need to do. Shoutout to Moose and Wali! P.S. they are opening a second location soon (steakhouse style) which I am excited to try!
