Went last year for a meal after hearing the hype and were terribly disappointed. They gave a speech at the start of the meal which was lovely and we liked how they passed the tray of after dinner drinks from one guest to the next. Both of those created a lovely spirit of connection. Other than that, would never go back. The food was awful. Not one good thing to say about it. Not sure why they get these glowing reviews but the Emperor has no clothes comes to mind.
I've had some of the best meals of my life at Brushland. There's truly nowhere else like it: the welcoming atmosphere sets it apart from almost every other restaurant. Instead of the typical tension you find in dining establishments, Brushland boasts a relaxed vibe and a quiet, efficient kitchen, thanks to its simple and humane approach: one meal, one service, three nights a week. If the meticulous attention to detail in each dish doesn't warm the hearts of the skeptical among us (just look at the frustrated comments about hipsters and newcomers), the kindness and generosity of the owners surely will. And just to be clear, the food is outstanding. While it's not inexpensive, it's definitely worth saving up for a special occasion. The quality of the food and the ambiance could easily justify a higher price, and it would still attract a sizable clientele. Plus, the portions are quite generous, often including a complimentary cocktail and digestif, so you always leave satisfied. The service is attentive without being intrusive. This is a place where the experience has been finely tuned, allowing guests to feel part of something unique and special. With a farm-to-table concept featuring French and Persian influences, I hope you get the chance to enjoy what we have experienced at Brushland.
The experience was truly unique, featuring an array of bold and wild flavors. The chef, who shared his Persian heritage, delighted us with stories about how his grandmother prepared some of the dishes. The olive cake was a highlight, while the lamb, although a bit gamey and tough, was flavorful. The initial courses offered a delightful mix of Persian delicacies; some were excellent, while others were just okay. It was definitely on the pricey side. I particularly enjoyed the moment when the chef presented a whole cooked lamb for all to admire—it was quite a spectacle. Seating was arranged by tables accommodating groups of 2, 3, or 4, as this was a pre-set meal event with a family-style serving where everyone enjoyed the same dishes. The selection of wine and beer was great, and the service was impeccable and courteous. If you find yourself in the Catskills region, I highly recommend giving this place a try. Bovina is a charming little town worth visiting.
