Papa Umi - Bonn

I'd gone to Sunday lunch with friends who took me to this place since they loved it so much. I can see why, as the food was delicious and beautifully presented and the price was reasonable (I paid EUR 120 for a feast for five persons). There are special kids' menus and also alternative Asian dishes (e.g. Vietnamese) if you are not so keen on Japanese food. The place was very cozy without the kitsch that seems to be standard in many Asian restaurants in Bonn.I had soup, scallops, sushi and lemongrass tea and loved everything. Service was a bit slow but in the end everything worked out. There were very few people in the restaurant that Sunday, but I am told that the place is extremely busy on weekdays.

Upon our friends recommendation, we went there for the first time for dinner last night. Ambience was nice, food was great and the sliding doors were a bit weird for a sit down dinner spot, but except for the chill of the April evening, it didn't bother us much. Food portions were plentiful and flavorful with a touch of fusion. I'd skip the sake if you can. Definitely going back.

The restaurant is rather dark wit loud music, making it hard to maintain conversation in larger groups. The food was good but rather small portions for what we paid. Overall acceptable and your go to location for fast Asian food around Bertha-von-Suttner Platz

We were three people and had the summer rolls stuffed with salmon and spring rolls for starters as well as Sushi, Curry and the Terriyaki Salmon as mains. Everything dished out was delicious, it was just served with a couple of faults. The Sushi (the main dish for one of us) was served together with the Starters. The summer rolls came with chicken filling instead with salmon and upon our remark the young (and probably inexperienced) waiter started to swear loudly on our table and continued doing so on his way to the kitchen. We were not sure if he was upset with us, the chef or himself, but it seemed odd to us. To return with the right summer rolls took much longer than preparing the initial dish, so that I was already done with the spring rolls and my friend was finished with the Sushi. Both starters were delicious though. The Salmon and the Beef Curry were excellent as well. Flavourful and creatively plated, nothing to criticize. However, it was really hard to get the waiter's attention again after the 'problem' with the starter. To order more drinks was an ordeal which took us the better part of an hour. It wasn't a busy night, only a third of the tables was occupied, if at all, so it wasn't due to stress. The bill came up to 100 EUR for the three of us including beer and soft drinks, so not entirely on the cheap side, but totally worth for the quality of food. If they now come up with better service, all is good. I'll give them another chance. ;-)
