24.11.2019. Sometimes you can find local gems if you just look. Was always curious about Cuisine Afrique and finally got to experience it towards end of last year. It is quite a large premises and you don't realise it from the entrance. Lovely interior, and a great outdoor area too. Tables all decorated. There was a couple celebrating an anniversary and loved how they decorated their special table for the occasion. We had booked a table for 5, asking for outdoors taking a chance as the weather was touch and go for a storm later that afternoon, but was assured if it rained we could be moved inside. They have a good menu selection, and really extensive wine menu for any wine lover. Even with explanations of the regions that the respective wines come from so you are spoilt for choice. They brought us a spring roll as an amuse bouche, really nice start to the experience. Drinks, had to start with a Cosmo and we ordered a few other Cocktails, like a Jungle Tikki and Watermelon and Ginger Spike. Funky names too. For starters we tried the Crumbed Prawns, Baked Mushroom Gamberi, Snails, Chilli poppers and Chicken wings. Delicious in every bite. For mains we had the Rib eye (grass fed) with chips, Fillet (grass fed) with side of veg, Grilled Pork Chops with Salad, Chicken Macchiato with Onion rings and chips and various sauces on the side. Everything was beautifully made, except for the Fillet that was rather chewy and not tender. Service was great we had 2 ladies assisting us, as it was still quiet and only a few more people arrived. Yes I've forgotten their names again, and I am sure I had it written not to forget, I stand to be corrected but I think one was Alice. We took some of our food as takeaways to make space for dessert to share. Ordered the New York Cheesecake, Chocolate Volcano and the Vanilla bean Ice cream with Chocolate Sauce. Couldn't fault anything. From start to finish everything was good and an enjoyable atmosphere. When asking for the bill, I was busy working out the tip plus extra (after checking all the items) as we've been trying where possible to always give more due to lockdown, but I double checked the bill to make sure I had calculated correctly then noticed that what I thought was the VAT line, was actually a 10% service charge automatically added to our bill. Now please note we were a table of 5 not 6 or more, nor did we book for more and not have a guest arrive. When I questioned the one waitress as to why am I being automatically charged the 10% as I was actually calculating more, she said the manager told her to do so. I was so annoyed that the manager did not come and mention this to our table nor did our waitresses point this out, so I would have easily doubled a tip without knowing it. As a result we just paid the bill as is and left. Had no energy to chat to the manager to ask how he can just instruct their staff to do so, do they assume we wouldn't tip, when the menu clearly states 6 or more the service charge is automatic (which is standard practice at most places and specified) It's little things like that I find cheeky and makes me not want to be a repeat client, even though the food, drinks and atmosphere was good. Communication and common courtesy would be nice to have been told why? Last year I had another restaurant disguise a 10% tip as extras on our bill. I knew very well no one added extras on their breakfasts and when I addressed our waiter he quickly amended it...and I will not go back there.
