Nottoway River Country Club

It takes a lot for me to give a golf course a 5-star rating. I appreciate golf courses based on location, other courses in the area, condition and even golf courses I have played outside the area. My 5-star review does not mean that it was perfect, but viewed with all things, it was definitely excellent in my book. This 9-hole course is located in a small town called Blackstone. It is a 30-minute drive from South Hill and 40 minutes from Farmville. It does not pretend to be a ruthless, pristine course that has top-class standards and exceptional membership fees. Nonetheless, that doesn't mean they couldn't be one of those places if they wanted. Honestly, a good number of exclusive courses I played in larger cities are not almost as well maintained as this course. And that! The course recently suffered a flash that damaged its irrigation system. They still water, but not as much as they would normally do. As such, the course was dry, but they definitely did everything they can until the system is repaired. Their hard work and dedication to the site have kept it in great condition and it showed. This is even though the area hasn't had much rain in the last few months. That in itself told me everything I had to know about the good people who own and operate this place. As you probably know, hot and dry conditions would normally be the death of most golf courses, without sufficient irrigation. That's not the case at Nottoway Country Club. Some might ask how or why this course was able to resist it and stay in great condition?? Well, I'm telling you... aside from the great care through the floor holders, they also chose to go with Burmuda! Yep, this course includes Burmuda Putting Greens, instead of Bent Grass. This is quite common in the south, but not really here. Burmuda needs a mild climate, so this is as far north as I have ever seen this kind of green. The biggest attribute of Burmuda is that it also needs much less water than curved grass and other lawn types. These greens can withstand some pretty hard conditions and that they have this summer! Nevertheless, I can say without a doubt that these greens looked great despite their setbacks. Burmuda has something from a grain to its growth pattern that can make it tricky. However, it only takes a few putts to find them that really is not all that is different from any other putting green that you are playing before. I don't know about you, but I'd rather have a lush plaster surface that makes a little outrageous than greens that are sponge, unhealthy or not sick at all. Beyond the green, the rest of this respectable 9-hole course was also great. The tea boxes were well maintained and the fairways. The rough and unplayed areas of the course were also beautifully held. For reference I am a high handicap golfer and I usually lose several balls per round, only in rough or high grass areas. I just lost a single ball today. This is because I have blown it into the woods, in one of the only wood-feeded areas on the course. This course is so open and well maintained, it is almost impossible to lose your golf ball no matter how far you damage it. To summarize things, the state and overall layout of this course was just incredible. If that wasn't enough, the staff was very nice and so were the members who played today. You have a small bar in the Pro-Shop with snacks, drinks and beer. The Pro-Shop itself is small, but they have everything essential. All in all, it's just a great place to play. With all that in mind, I felt like this course deserves a simple 5 stars for its class. I can't wait for my next round of golf on this course and I recommend it to anyone who gets the chance to play here. You will not be disappointed!!
