Zenkichi Modern Japanese Brasserie

We were travelling several times to Japan. We know what is possible in the japanese cuisine up to Kaiseki. So we wanted to get japanese food in Berlin and a friend told us to visit the Zenkichi. First of all we did not find it. There is no sign on the door. Then we followed the staff to a dark, interesting decorated corner with two a little bit uncomfortable benches at a table. The crew was very friendly for sure. After all we had a 4 course menu that was ok. The miso soup was ordinary, the sashimi was good but the tempura as main course was dry and finally we were still hungry. It was a little bit disappointing for us. Perhaps we should have chosen the 6 set menu, but this seemed us too expensive. The sake we had with the menu was not included but excellent. So after all: Quite ok, but we will wait for our next visit in Japan to attend authentic japanese food.

Place is beautiful but we arrived to the restaurant to find that, when booking for more than 6 people (we were 7), everyone has to go for the 65 EUR - 8-course menu, with 10% tip added, no drinks included. Steep from the a la carte options and inflexible if someone wants to take a lighter option. Staff didn't offer us any alternative... disappointing customer service. We had to walk out.

Top class. The amazing decor, food, sake and service. There can be no better restaurant in Berlin. Unlike other Japanese places in Berlin, this is totally authentic. You could easily be in Japan. If it was in Japan it would probably have Michelin Stars. The entrance is hard to find, but that is part of the thrill

We ordered a table for our 8th anniversary. The restaurant is located in the basement level, which adds charm to its personally chosen decorative interior. We chose the 4-course menu which was tasty and kept our tummies full, along with Japanese beers. The crew was very attentive, helpful and polite. It was once in a life time experience.

Nothing really wrong with the place but not worth the price tag. The tasting menu left us hungry, and had relatively few highlights overall. All portions are small. Very little value ingredients such as amazing fish. If you are looking for a decent Japanese eat at reasonable prices look elsewhere. If you are not hungry, on an expense budget, and looking for a trendy place, this one is cut for you.
