Schmuck's Restauration - Berlin

This place reminds me of a work canteen before they were all privatised. The patrons are mostly office workers looking for a cheap filling lunch. The food is very good value and you can afford to eat your main meal here every day. The food is mostly German style, and also includes good cakes. They've made some efforts to decorate the place but this is definitely not a place for a romantic date. It is hard to find, so look for the sign post from the road.

This hall like cafeteria-type restaurant is like a throw-back from old Eastern Germany. Tables are plastic topped (admittedly with a small cloth throw over them); stark and in rows, and the place exudes almost no atmosphere whatsoever when you first go in! However, the (non-English speaking) staff are a delight; the customers are obviously 'returners' often with children, and the food is honest, delicious and cheap. We happened upon it when going to Berlins little lauded Markisches Museum (a MUST SEE if ever there was one!) and the place had a non-commercial old-fashioned feel that has largely disappeared everywhere, let alone 'happening' Berlin. Good steak, potatoes, a huge mixed salad and beer for two people came to about 20 euros. The steak was cooked from fresh exactly as we asked for it, and the salad was as crisp as any we've tasted.Apparently this place has existed since well before the War, when no doubt it had less of a utility feel about it, but as a pleasureable and unusual experience - don't miss it.

As always very tasty and freshly cooked. the apfelstrudel is a dream.
