River Cottage Hq - Axminster

A few weeks ago, I had the thrilling chance to spend a day at River Cottage with over 50 fellow food enthusiasts and bloggers. After finishing work, I traveled to Axminster the night before and enjoyed a lovely stay at a charming little bed and breakfast.

The dining experience was really fantastic, featuring fresh, local ingredients. It's just a pity that we visited on a cloudy day, as I can only imagine how wonderful it must be in the sunshine.

However, I do have one suggestion: it would be better to keep the cakes out of direct sunlight, either by adding some shade or relocating the display area. My cake was warm and served on a napkin, which rendered the plate unusable. I wonder why so many cafes and restaurants do this—is it purely for presentation? On a positive note, the cake was delightful, and the coffee was very good. The menu remains interesting and varied, catering to a wide range of tastes and dietary requirements. Prices are reasonable given the quality of the food and the overall dining experience. The restaurant is modern and well-organized; it feels slightly smaller than the Axminster location but boasts a large outdoor area for dining or enjoying tea in good weather. I deducted a star for parking, which has always been a challenge here, often leaving one with white chalk dust or mud on their clothing and in their car. This can also pose problems for the bistro on rainy days. I will miss the Axminster setup, and it’s a shame the city has lost such a charming attraction; however, I understand the economic reasons behind the move. Overall, it was a lovely visit!

Excellent location with breathtaking view. excellent eating with beautiful and friendly efficient staff. also fair prices. this new kitchen also has very good outside eating, but can require sun umbrellas over the tables on a hot summer day.

So good we went twice while down on holiday! Great quality, tasty food and doesn’t cost the earth either. Friendly, attentive staff and dogs are welcome indoors and outside. Def recommend a visit plus you can combine with walks at Trinity Hill just up the road.
