My second visit was this past Saturday, where I indulged in the Salmon Cakes Benedict and the Bacon, Egg, and Cheddar Biscuit, as shown in the picture below. I enjoyed a coffee on my first visit and opted for sweet tea this time. I also sampled my friend's cheese grits and loved everything I tried. The biscuits are quite filling, so don't hesitate to take leftovers home with you. I appreciated the fact that the server gave me a water cup without me having to ask for one. The wait time on both occasions was reasonable, and I liked the self-service counter which made the whole dining experience more efficient. If you do have to wait, you can take a stroll in the Oconee River Park located next to the restaurant. I am looking forward to returning to try out more dishes from their menu, especially the Pimento Cheese Burger, Breakfast Taco Plate, Pulled Pork Bowl, and Cinnamon Bun.
I visited Mama's Boy shortly after graduating about a year and a half ago, and at that time, I noted that the restaurant had not become complacent. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case. The Mama's Boy on Oak St. that I once knew and loved is no more. The coffee is served in paper cups, water in plastic cups, and the interior decor resembles a middle school cafeteria. The familiar diamond patterned seating layout, cute coffee mugs, and tablecloths are all gone. The service has also declined, with staff members appearing rushed and unfriendly. The person taking our order seemed constantly confused. I am giving two stars because the food was still good, but everything else was disappointing. While I understand there is a lot of competition in the breakfast industry, I believe Mama's Boy should have maintained their upscale image. This visit felt like a letdown and a departure from the Mama's Boy brand.
I typically do not leave 1-star reviews, but I had a disappointing experience at this restaurant. I ordered food to go and was told I could wait inside or outside for my order. Despite waiting outside, I noticed that people who arrived after me were being served on the patio. When I checked inside, I found my order sitting on the to go shelf with a receipt attached. The bacon I ordered was supposed to be crispy, but it was limp and undercooked with burnt edges. Additionally, I was disappointed to receive only 2 small pieces for over $3. Despite it being a small takeout order, the staff expected a tip. I left a tip, but I regret it.
Very quaint and inviting place. Small footprint with a large heart for taste and service. Wide variety of choices for every appetite. Today I went for a healthy start to the day and it was perfect!
Best breakfast I've ever had! The Bacon Egg and Cheese scramble was unbelievable. The bacon was phenomenal and made for the perfect combination of flavor. I'm not usually a big fan of grits, but the cheese grits were so flavorful and amazing. The biscuit was so fluffy and tasty as well. I tried a bite of the tofu, and it was amazingly seasoned. The service was great as well. The employee at the front desk was so kind and the food came out in minutes.
