LOk lived in the SF bay and Marin for 30+ years... Lombard of Petaluma now closed for ever, Bordenave in San Rafael..,,,, used to get it hot in the market every day at 3.... Those were the kings of bread to me. Learned that the natural yeast needs a specific temperature, bacteria and humidity to get that sour tang. and only a few places have that combo.. North County Sonoma, San Luis obispo Salinas Valley and Northern Sandiego. It is biology and climate that man can not duplicate. Apart from those places your product will be lacking in flavor and texture. SO, for 60 years I have been a discerning sourdough addict. .................Thought I had found and tasted the best possible.......... Then... I went to Morro Bay at Dorns and had a almost holy bread experience ..., That blew me away. BRIANS bread... their sourdough was so far beyond anything I had ever tasted that I would have said it is not possible..... I was stunned by the tang and texture and the wonderful crust..... I would honestly say this is the finest sourdough bread in the world... all natural and fragrant...... Warning: once you try Brians bread all others will never ever be satisfied by another.... EVER. Here is a recipe for sourdough garlic bread that will destroy you for any another Get a French loaf of Brians.... spli it,,,, dust with garlic powder, then butter it heavily, over the butter sprinkle garlic salt, then a thick spread good mayonnaise over that.......then cover with parmesan grated put in a 400F oven till cheese melts and mayo melts too.... about 15-20 min..... Lock the doors and sit down with a glass of Chianti.... and be transported to another reaality.world........................
The absolute best quality and tasting sourdough bread I’ve ever had. Fresh and soft texture inside with a great crust. The sourdough flavor is amazing.
This bread deserves more stars. It is the very best in sourdough bread. Used to buy all the other sourdough's with San Luis being my preferred, but like others mentioned here quickly disappointed in their decline in taste, texture etc. stumbled into Brian's bread in the Santa Maria Costco. Heavenly! Best bread ever and now I won't buy any other, ever. I bought 4 loaves a few days ago and it has quickly vanished here, Two were cracked wheat sourdough rounds and the other two were sourdough baguette style for making garlic bread. The latter was gone the first night. The rest has been the breakfast and lunch staple, making everything on it or with it taste better! I will buy 4 or more loaves when I head home to SoCal!
After having a Brian's sourdough roll with our dinner last night (Ada's in Pismo Beach) I asked the waiter where they came from. He explained that they came from Brian's Bakery. We tracked them down in Atascadero and unfortunately they only sell the rolls to restaurants. Luckily the assistant manager was there and shared some with me. It was wonderful of him to do that for us. Thank you so much and they are delicious!
