The food scene in Assisi has become marketably better over the past two decades—even if a favorite or two didn’t make it through the pandemic. Long known for “exploiting” pilgrims tourists alike, Assisi (especially around the Piazza Commune) now boasts some of the best Umbrian restaurants for miles. On a Monday night in early November virtually everything was shut down so my guests talked me into trying this tacky Osteria. Suffice to say, in my 32+ years of staying here I have NEVER had a worse meal. Served cold and without enthusiasm or flavor, don’t repeat our mistake and tarnish your stay by coming here. If you insist, avoid the spinach (boiled to death, not sautéed as we requested or even with a hint of lemon), cingale (tasted like rubber out of a can), “local” pastas (overcooked and lacking zest), and the coperta bread (served in a reused bag and stale) were particularly bad. The scamorza con speck was the best thing we ordered—we should have left after that! We were bloated within an hour of leaving and certainly won’t return again.
They charged 9 euro for a beer. The food is nothing special. They don’t even accept POS payments, only cash... typical restaurant that avoid paying tax : Giving only 2 stars because the service was friendly, but I felt conned :

Nel centro storico di Assysi, in una bella corsia si trova questa tipica taverna con prodotti e cucina umbra. ogni piatto è spiegato con attenzione dai proprietari e il camino aperto dove cucinano è delizioso. carbonara di tartufo, uovo strapazzato con tartufo e cinghiale in umido. Ottima cena!
