Du Lac D'estaing - Arras-en-Lavedan

Tasty plentiful, traditional fare done well! And in a lovely setting! Service is quick too! Highly recommend for a casual meal or snack.

Here you have to go. This small restaurant close to the lake Lac D 'Estaing in the mountains near Argeles Gazost in Midi Pyrenees. It is worth it. They have a menu card with a 18 EUR menu and a 28 EUR where we prefer the last due to the diverse selection of dishes never had before. Forget to have steak and fries. Here it is local and in combination with the products you can find here in the mountains. We had Effeuillée de truite fumée, very tasty. Main course Pastilla de canard au foie gras. Dessert was a Baba arrondi d l 'armanac and my wife Coupe glasée aux fruit de bois. Out of the menu we were served a small appetizer of stinging nettle soup. Really recommended. Book table in advance.

The most noise we heard at this hotel was the sound of the stream across the road, and the bleating of sheep that strolled past in the morning. We spent 3 nights at the Hotel Restaurant du Lac d'Estaing, and it was our favorite of all the hotels on our 2013 vacation. Dinners were delicious, featuring regional specialties in a different fixed menu each night. We will long remember the friendly welcome from the hotelkeepers and the beauty of the great craggy mountains all around.

My wife is a food writer but also a vegerarian and this whole region of France is very difficult for anyone as interested in, and knowledgeable about, food as she is. (It's mostly hostility, followed by the offer of a goat's cheese salad or an omelette. Here, when phoned in advance and told this was to be a Big Birthday lunch for us, the chef was friendly, very prepared to be flexible and to be challenged, and to create a menu du jour specially for the 4 veggies in our party of eleven. When we arrived and the restaurant is in an absolutely beautiful spot at the head of a splendid lake the meals we were given were excellent. He really had bothered, been creative and used fresh, delicious ingredients. We will definitely come back here.

Great local choice and friendly staff. Good beer and wine with a range of local food at all prices. Superbly situated for a visit to the lake and a great place to sit and rest. The goat and sheep cheeses were remarkable and bread and water just arrive to make the meal complete.
