Utzutzu - Alameda

We had a really special evening here. Much like many spots in Japan, this is tucked away up some nondescript stairs with no signage; you're not going to end up here by accident. It's very small, with room for 8 diners at the sushi bar. The decor is minimalist and tasteful. The sushi chef showed us all the fish we would eat and provided its provenance. Each bite was perfect. If you've declined to head into the city for a fancy omakase meal because of cost, this may be able to fit your budget. Plus, it was 80's music the whole time. I really want everyone to go here because it's clearly a labor of love and I want to see this spot and places like it succeed. Get a reso. You won't regret it. So amazing! You really feel like you are in a chic city at a secret, fancy restaurant and not in Alameda. Absolutely one of my top 5 dining experiences.

We booked through Google, restaurant said They only book through “resy”. Turned us away. Then charged us $400 for not showing up to a res we did not have. Clown shoes.

Disappointed, wasn't like it used to be when I had Yume almost a decade ago?? Now the pieces are thinner and smaller, my sons thought we were only snacking on appetizers by the time dinner was concluded. When my son asked for one more piece at the end it was even thinner. I need to find another omakase that's worth my time. Sorry chef you failed me and it's a one and done experience. The staff was great just not the food. I hope the staff get to keep all the tips and didn't have to share with the chef??
