Our first visit to Dom since Luke's been on the stove - so had high expectations based on his food we'd enjoyed at Fat Belly Kat in Brunswick Heads several years ago. We mentioned this to our waiter and asked if Luke was cooking - he said "yes" but that got no engagement. I'd expected our interest in his Spanish-influenced food and compliments to be recognised in some small way but I guess our waiter didn't communicate our interest to LukeWe were one of three tables of four which soon became two as one table's diners left so the two floor staff should have been on top of their game [one seated us then sat down the back for the evening so we didn't notice if he provided service to others - he had no apparent 'front-of-house' role else would have quickly picked up and corrected the service inadequacies that persisted until we left]. We'd read the TA reviews and were alert to pricing given references to a 50% discount on Dimi bookings and comments that items like water were high-priced to compensate, with no consultation on pricing before servingWe'd not booked with Dimi and were soon seated and provided the tap water we'd asked for - the waiter poured from a jug then ignored our water levels during our meal - much better to simply leave the jug|bottle etc. on our tableNext, I tried to order a beer but was told that wasn't available and they only had one left after the Waymouth Street party and their suppliers hadn't delivered more. That street party was 5 days beforehand and the Union Hotel is 50 m away and there's numerous opportunities to re-stock good beers with many outlets regardless of their historic menu presenceThe small menu was straight forward and looked good. We asked details of the 'fish of the day' but our waiter didn't know and had to rush to the kitchen - no excuse - even a cheat sheet would have been betterWe each ordered entree and mains, the highlights beingSlow-cooked pork belly roulade, leek and pear chutney, snow pea shoots $22.5. While the belly was slightly over-cooked the flavours combined well - a tasty entreeDuck liver pate - cornichons, hazel nuts, porcini salt, toast, marsala jelly $19 - another good entreeLamb rump - creamed brussel sprouts, black lentil jus, fried baby capers $36.5 - I loved this dish, especially the fine-grained lamb and flavour combinationsMushroon duxelle tart - vicchysoise, eggplant, candied potato, mojo picon $25We had several wines by the glass and enjoyed themOur $299 bill was around our normal spend for this style of food and wine. We enjoyed our dishes - the only downside being the poor service
Visited for the first time. Empty for a Wednesday night but still took almost ten minutes for the waitress to notice a table of five had arrived. We were really looking forward to a great dining experience however the waitress's attitude tonight was not acceptable. Her table service - even asking if she was having a bad evening - was unacceptable. Food is was average. A steak having to be returned as not cooked as requested. Over priced for the amount of food - eg a $40 steak minimal - and side dishes at $12 - hardly enough for one serve. Disappointed overall. Two of the five requested desserts and were saddened at the size of portion. Shame as if the service of waiting staff was better food could have been forgiven. Will not be recommending.
Fantastic restaurant with amazing food. A lovely restaurant with great ambience in a good location in the heart of the city. Definitely worth a visit.
We turned up late, and were very well and polightly received. We had a wonderful evening. The degustation menu was perfect in terms of the serving size - not too little, not too much, just right. And the dishes were throughly enjoyed by all. Limited wine list though! We had an attentive waiter, who was not very experienced, but will certainly go far judging by tonights service.
