Beautiful surroundings, rustic tables and dinnerware, the smell of oak barrels and open fires set the scene for a fine dining experience. Unfortunately this is an experience that fails to deliver on the promise. Poor service, without an eye for detail, leaves the diner needing to search for explanation of the menu and wine options to accompany the meal. How this can happen at a premium wine maker’s own establishment beggars belief. The meal in itself is interesting, balanced and flavoursome, but it's not inspiring. A pretty ordinary dining experience to be honest. We had booked for our annual staff Christmas lunch and had selected the 5 course, 2 hour option as opposed to the 9 course, 4 hour option. We booked for 5 people and when we arrived, the table was set for 6. No big deal but a sign of things to come. After having been shown to our table, we sat and another staff member came past and dropped a few menus on the table, no explanation. Stunning setting and great way to spend a day. celebrate a jubilee and enjoyed the signature flight. they make their own brot, which is served directly from the often, beautiful and warm and a good opportunity to start the meal. we decided that the staff chose our wein for us and found our waiter to be very good and we thought the wein was also perfect. all the staff we met were very friendly and it was a great note to get a voucher for the cellar door after lunch. we will surely come back to a long lunch with friends.
