However, we were not impressed with the Antipasto starter plate as it was very small and overpriced at £9.95. The fish pie was tasty but seemed to have been left under a heat lamp for too long, resulting in a skin forming on the sauce. Additionally, the garden peas appeared dried out. Despite these issues, I chose not to send the dish back. The fish and chips dish, priced at £17.95, was delicious although on the pricier side. Overall, we found the experience to be just okay for the price and we are not in a rush to return.
My partner and I dined at this restaurant last night. It was quite busy, but there were plenty of staff who were all very friendly. As someone who is gluten free, I often struggle to find a variety of options, but that was not the case here. I ordered the fish pie, which was packed with salmon, smoked haddock, cod, and king prawns, topped with mashed potatoes. It was served with petit pois and a delicious sauce. My partner chose the chicken, ham, and leek pie, which he really enjoyed. For dessert, I had the crème brûlée with gluten free shortcake biscuits, while my partner had the cherry pie. The meal was definitely worth the price. With a larger shandy and a glass of wine, we thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience. It is a place we would be happy to return to, even though it is not very close to our location. For those looking for gluten free options, this restaurant is a clear choice.
This was our first visit to the Horse and Groom in over years and sadly it didn’t hit the spot. Coffee arrived and when I asked for sweetener I was told they didn’t have any as they’d all been stolen the prior week. Kinda...then made it my problem. Chicken liver pate starter used to be delicious, but this time was tasteless and bland. We had to wait over hour for the main course, which was honestly was too long as it’s was outside of normal lunch hours. I had the crispy beef salad and it was swimming in chilli sauce. If they’d given me a straw I’d have not been surprised as it was more like a soup. We might go back as I appreciate they’re dog friendly, but won’t be for a while.
We had a lovely time here, no complaints at all. It’s a comfortable traditional old solid pub and restaurant serving lovely, good value, excellent quality food. We thoroughly enjoyed the ambiance , friendly and efficient service and extensive choice of drinks. I will be returning...with my family very soon. Thanks to John and his top team.
I ate at this pub as part of a group in December we ordered from the or course Christmas menu. The group did not feel that they were greeted appropriately by management; we arrived mins early for pre meal drinks which...seemed to be a problem for them even though the table was ready. Reasonable selection of beers, Ringwood brewery ‘Razorback’ acceptable, slow service. Several choices for each course was offered, I went for the ham and black pudding terrine followed by beef bourguignon for the main course. courses: and courses: The first course was totally inadequate, very small portion, little taste and served too dry. The main was flavoursome with rich gravy but the portion size was hopelessly small for a main with minimal supporting vegetables. Dessert was of a higher standard but all served up several minutes before the cutlery arrived! A request for tea/coffee to round off the meal was acknowledged by the server but nothing materialised so we finished up and paid our bills at the bar (slow). No gratuity on this occasion I’m afraid so off home for a much needed sandwich!! It’s going to be a lottery here depending on your choice on the menu. Caution when choosing. So the summary is: below average service with a poor value meal.
