I hadn't eaten at Bismillah in ages, but my husband and I found ourselves in the area and I decided to drag him in. He's had some fall allergies and I figured some good comfort food would help perk him up. I agree with some of the other reviews that it can be a bit intimidating being the only non-Indian or Pakistani customers and ordering off of the one menu in the whole place, but I've always had pleasant service and the food is always delicious. The naan is so, so good. Perfectly crisp on the bottom while still maintaining the right, light chewiness. We ordered two vegetable samosas that were perfectly fine. Nothing to write home about, but the accompanying cilantro chutney a good, spicy complement. Frontier chicken was worth it. Fish masala was absolutely delicious, but bordering on the oily side (and watch out for the pin bones). The fish was absolutely melt-in-your-mouth good and the spices were spot on, with nothing in particular smacking you in the face. The tea here is kind of blah, but I personally like my chai on the spicier side. The mango lassi is much more worth it.
I drive past this place a hundred times before trying it, and now I'm kicking myself, because it is one of my favorite places to eat. Walking in can be a little intense we are often the only non Muslim, non Pakistani customers in the place. It is east to get past this when you smell the food cooking, though. A half order of Frontier chicken is more than enough for one person. And it is out of this world. The samosas are great, too especially with the freshly made coriander chutney they serve. And their naan isn't baked until they are ready to bring your food to the table so that it arrives piping hot and crisp. Eat here!
If you are a paratha lover then you have to visit Bismillah. I love them because: they are delicious and made just as I remember them being made at home they are three times the size they cost a $1.50 and one is enough!! If you couple this with the 'frontier chicken ' or their 'bhinidi masala ' you 're in food paradise. The only thing about Bismillah is that its more a 'take out ' place than an 'eat in ' one. Its great food for a special ocassion, however the restaurant itself lacks that special ambience. I normally do take out or go there with others who would be OK with the ambience which isn 't much to speak of.
I had one of my best Chicken dishes, Frontier Chicken, here. It is an un-assuming restaurant on W. Devon Street. It is a sauteed cubed chicken dish with tomatoes, onions, peppers and spices. The texture reminded me of Kung Pao chicken. The dish is mainly red in color due to the Tomatoes. It was pretty tasty. It came with two delicious large chappattis. The interior is simple with table clothed tables and chairs. The service was friendly and family run. The menu had many dishes, but it will take a few more visits to enjoy their other dishes.
