Why is it that restaurants in gorgeous locations seem to invariably struggle with food quality? That is the tale of Blue Heron. Located in a 5-star resort/spa just 20 minutes from downtown Santa Fe, the restaurant has indoor seating in an understated, elegant space as well as outdoor seating on a patio next to a pond surrounded by cottonwood trees. Sadly, the food fails to live up to the ambiance. Pork tenderloin was mediocre, even after sending it back to be redone when the first attempt featured charred and overdone meat. Sides were almost inedible. Diver scallops were better with a tasty sauce, but only passable sides. Breakfast was not much better, with green chile eggs Benedict served with only one half of an English muffin instead of both halves and a thin, butter-forward sauce that bore no relation to the hollandaise listed on the menu. On the other hand, an omelette was very tasty and well prepared. Our server, who was the same at dinner and breakfast the next morning, was the best part of the meals. She was knowledgeable about both the food and wine list and extremely attentive. Overall, Blue Heron is a real disappointment given how idyllic and well managed the other aspects of Ojo Santa Fe seem to be.
The restaurant is beautiful and the service is excellent. The food is just okay. I will give it another chance and order a different dish next time.
I used to adore this restaurant and frequented it often, but something has changed - perhaps a new chef or new management. The food was messy, poorly presented, and extremely overpriced. Excessively overpriced, in fact.
I don’t generally leave reviews but left this restaurant feeling extremely frustrated. My friends and I came to the Blue Heron Restaurant for dinner after a (underwhelming) spa day at the Ojo spa. We chose this restaurant because it was convenient and had good reviews on OpenTable (which was extremely misleading). For the following reasons, we had a poor dining experience: 1. Underwhelming service- When we came in, staff took a while to seat us. The staff seemed very aloof and unengaged in our service. Our server took a long time to see us initially and was not very attentive. She also did not seem very experienced. 2. Bad food- We shared a salad and after serving half of it, we found a long hair at the bottom of the plate. We told the server and she said oh and took the plate away. We had to ask for a replacement salad and she never took away the shared plates with the contaminated salad or apologized. Overall our food was generally terrible. The meat featured in the sliders tasted like it had been reheated after sitting for a week. The sliders also contained wilted lettuce and extra oily barbecue sauce that was all together inedible. We also ordered sweet potato and truffle parm fries. The sweet potato fries tasted like they were from an air frier and were clumped together on the plate. The truffle parm fries arrived with two pieces of shaved parmesan cheese clumped together atop a minuscule fraction of the side. We ordered the mahi-mahi fish tacos and the fish tasted like it had been nuked in a microwave. Here were the positives: The feta dip was good but extremely salty. The burger was okay but the bun was soggy and overall it tasted like it had been sitting for a bit and all juices had seeped in the bun. We did end up telling our server about how bad the sliders were and she comped those from our bill, along with the salad (without us asking which was appreciated). We also enjoyed the atmosphere of the hotel overall as it is on a beautiful property.
