My family and I had the pleasure of having an early dinner here in late September 2023. This is the type of operation where you order at the counter and the food is delivered to you in their outdoor patio. There is no indoor dining room. NOTE that this is not a late-night operation; they generally close at 6 pm unless they sell out of food earlier. Our party of six adults and two toddlers ordered a wide variety of menu items, and not one item was found lacking in flavor and texture. I consider brisket to be the true test of barbecue, and the brisket here was virtually flawless. Other meats such as pork ribs, tri-tip and pulled pork were exemplary as well. Sides such as beans, slaw, mac and cheese, potato salad, potato bread and elote were quite good, and the jalapeno cheddar corn bread was outstanding. And, the banana pudding was positively scrumptious. The owners of Heritage Barbecue clearly take great pains to create world-class barbecue in an unlikely setting as South Orange County, and I strongly recommend sampling the delicious product of those efforts should you find yourself anywhere near the area.
Lots of hype in the area about great bbq in San Juan. We finally took an afternoon to go visit the storied Heritage bbq. Walking up lets you know ow you are in the right spot. ! The smokers are busy and the line is long.. such anticipation! We ordered what was probably the. Work think.. I figured a brisket Sando would have sliced brisket .. much to my surprise it was more like shredded brisket (think pulled pork) it was pretty much tasteless and could been cooked in my momma’s oven, not the big offset rigs we stood by. My wife had the pulled pork and wild a lot tastier than the brisket , it to lacked any “smoke” flavor. We split a Jalapeño and cheese cornbread .. while moist and cheesy, it lacked any jalapeño flavor. Save your hard earned and skip this place head over to Bad to the Bone . Much tastier!
Michelin listed across from San Juan Capistrano mission. Always a line but we’ll worth the wait. Tasty food served in outside rustic setting. The quality of the food was great but comes with a price.
Charging Michelin prices for standard bbq. Not willing to shell out $100+ for bbq while standing in line outside for 1.5 hrs. Hertigae lost its ways, was nicer and better quality before it became all the hype. Tri tip was dry, brisket fatty and $37/lbs for 1 lbs mostly bone ribs are just too much...
This place rocks. Found it by accident after seeing the Mission across the street. We are foodies, so my 10 year old spied the Michelin Bib Gourmand sign as soon as we were seated. Counter service with ample seating. We had lunch on a weekday around 1:30pm, waited 3 minutes to order and another 5 minutes for our food (yep! and had a variety of menu items: Puerco Press Sando Special enormous, well seasoned, tender, moist. Even the bread was awesome. Took home half. Brisket (Taco delicious! One taco has a generous amount of meat for the light bite. TriTip (Taco delicious! Ditto. Texas Chili lots of flavor, our 10 year old loved it. Sides: Mac was creamy and noodles not over cooked. Our other 10 year old doesn’t like mac n cheese and he loved it Potato Salad I’m generally not a potato salad lover, but one of the kids wanted it and it was delicious also. Not too much dill or mayo, which I appreciated. Condiments pickled onions went on everything; peppers, mustard, BBQ sauce all good. They do serve water complimentary, so maybe that has changed since some of the other reviewers visited. Staff was friendly and courteous. The place is family owned and members of the family were working the front of the house with enthusiasm. All four of us left more than satisfied. Stop here if you’re in the area!
