Crown and Crumpet in San Francisco 's Japantown promises a charming afternoon tea experience, but my visit fell far short of expectations, landing it a disappointing 1 star review. We were a group of 3 and mistakenly assumed we each needed an afternoon tea $44 each! . Looking back at it, we should have only ordered one or maybe two afternoon tea and shared it. While they do offer a la carte options like sandwiches and salads, we opted for the full afternoon tea experience. They cater to dietary restrictions with gluten-free, vegan, and even children 's tea options, which is commendable. The ambiance leans heavily feminine, with a sea of pink dominating the menus, cushions, and tablecloths. As expected, the clientele skewed heavily towards women. We tried three different tea flavors: Keep Calm and Carry On, Paris Herbal, and Lychee Congou. While the large pots were impressive in size, steeping enough for multiple people, the actual flavor was underwhelming. The promised notes of black currant, vanilla, and lychee were undetectable. The only flavor that stood out was the peppermint in the Keep Calm tea. Service was quick, but that 's where the positives end. The food was a major letdown. The crumpet, a namesake of the establishment, was cold and hard. The blueberry scone lacked flavor, and combining all our afternoon tea selections onto one platter resulted in a mess of textures and disappointment. Mini sausage rolls sat on top of the salad, turning soggy by the time we reached them. The sandwich spreads had an odd aftertaste, and the chai cookie tasted more like a snickerdoodle. To top it all off, we found a bug on one of the sweets. Needless to say, we left most of the food untouched after that discovery. Crown and Crumpet boasts a lovely concept, but the execution falls flat. Underwhelming flavors and inattentiveness to food quality resulted in a very disappointing experience.
Horrible, rude service. Overpriced garbage food. Will never return. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else!!!! Beware! Bugs in my food and drink.
The tea, food and atmosphere are good, but it feels a little pricey for what you get, though I guess if you ordered each item individually, it'd amount to about a similar cost, though I'm not sure what's behind the $15 fee for sharing. Getting a table is a bit tricky as well; seems it's based reservations.
Lots of charm. Friendly service. An absolutely wonderful Pot Pie recommended by the waitress. Best I've EVER had.Go with your family, pretend to be fancy, enjoy some great food.Cheers ? Kid-friendliness: There are some nice high chairs there for the little ones. There's a Sticker Crown you can grab for $6 to keep them entertained. Wheelchair accessibility: No stairs to get into the establishment. Complete Accessible.
