I can remember the ride there from our house, through the side streets, before the 125 freeway ever existed. Sometimes on our home way from Kmart (or just a special trip out there), we'd stop by Fosters Freeze for some ice cream and this was my favorite thing to get: A chocolate dipped cone! And this is the small cone, my friends. The large is SUPER TALL. I had enough trouble as it was eating this one quickly enough before it broke through the shell. I did manage to break through before a major meltdown. The Spring Valley location is still there! I went to their other location in Allied Gardens to obtain this cone though. It's just not the same when you get it from the El Pollo Loco/Fosters Freeze. They skimp on the soft serve there. Boo. Jake and I enjoyed treats there last weekend when it was SUPER DUPER HOT. A nice adieu to the summer and a fun little revisit to my past. What was your favorite cool
Definitely one of those hidden gems of Waring road in San Diego. Grew up going to Fosters Freeze in El Cajon before it turned into a Greek Chicken so when I moved to Mission Valley from Ocean Beach I knew this place was here and was STOKED! Now don’t get me wrong this isn’t a top5 burger spot like Classics Malt Shop, Hayes, Rocky’s, The Friendly, Swagyu, Balboa, Canada Steak Burger etc etc but for a little icream shop off Waring this place is solid! Love me some Crinkle Cut Frys and the Shakes are Solid. Now if you have ever seen my other reviews it’s all on the Portnoy Scale Burgers 7.1 Shakes 7.1 French Frys 7.7 Mozzarella Sticks 7.5
In my opinion this is the best soft serve ice-cream in town! Get the cone dipped in chocolate for a unique experience. It’s a great size and the chocolate reminds me of stuff I had as a child I.e. fresh and good quality. They also have an outdoors shaded seating area and plenty of parking right out front.
I visited this location today for the first time. I used to go to one in Escondido decades ago, before it unfortunately closed.. I drove an hour just to go back to a time when was a kid. I love this place. It's got nostalgia, good food, at a fair price. My service was excellent, friendly faces, it's not quite fast food, but that's probably why it's so good!. It's prepared with fresh, high quality ingredients. I went back in time, and visited some mighty sweet memories.
An old fashioned soft serve ice cream shop and burger joint. It is an original from the 1950's. A landmark in Allied Gardens. They have an indoor dining area and an outdoor area as well. Or order from the walk-up window!
