I really wanted to like Panaka because the lady serving us was very sweet and nice, the ambiance of the restaurant is very charming and its centrally located. My husband ordered the lomo saltado with beef and I ordered the same dish with alpaca. He ended up getting very sick with food poisoning and it was the only meal that we had not shared during the trip. I had taken a bite of the beef to taste the difference between beef and alpaca and my stomach was a little queasy hours later, but nothing compared to what my husband suffered. Regarding the food: the rice was lukewarm on both dishes and the lomo was a bit bland, needed more spice and heat. I'd suggest alternate restaurants around the area just to be safe.
The trout ceviche and alpaca saltada are excellent, and the pisco sour was the best we had during our month-long trip! In short, the restaurant was the perfect place for an authentic and elegant peruvian dinner, however, it is still a great place to swing by and pick up an inexpensive (but tasty) sandwich. It is still within the reach of budget travelers for lunch. Panaka is owned by a local peruvian family, one of its strengths.
