Shopping mall above the car park of Trader Joe's and Pier Import? Maybe only in Newport Beach, and that's where you can find the Mastro's Ocean Club. The sister restaurant Mastros Steakhouse is known for this. their steaks, while Ocean Club emphasize seafood. Thank you. serves the best of steak and seafood in this restaurant.
We have my sister for dinner here on 11/30/14. Server was Damien (I believe) and was very nice and very professional. We share a bowl of shells that was huge for us. had a very smoky tasty taste; but mussels were easy on the chewing side. My husband ordered the Mahi Mahi, I ordered appetizer size (3) of the Scallops, my sister ordered 6 oz Filet Mignon. The duck for my sister and I came out! My poor man had done his fish three times. First its fish can be served immediately you can see that it was so dried and overcooked without eating/tasting. Second time he got a brand new Mahi and was practically 'Raw'... the most disturbing thing is that they put the same fish on the grill and don't get a new fish or the kind of delicate fish to be cooked. Of course, the third was No charm and only a few bites. We ordered the potatoes with Lobster. What a ugly, ugly price tag. There was something soup not safe from butter or what, but did not look attractive, and the worst of all lobster was too overcooked and completely far away from tender as it should be. So disappointing, AND especially for $35!!! We have the side of the mushrooms... these were delish! Cocktails, wine and espresso were good. Dessert for the Bday girls was a HUGE chocolate cake that was 4 or 5 or 6 layers. Not bad. Overall, it was as good as I thought. The weather was not great to enjoy the beautiful views of the sea that we had reservations to meet the ocean. I read some authors who report to be too loud.... Guess where you're sitting.
Great food, cool interior, polished server. Everything feels like a high-end club. The MUSIC. Instead of stylish lounge acts, the space is made for every time when the wing lid is closed with a laptop on the top to play backings of modern songs that have never been completely made in Top 40. How to hear a mediocre radio station. As if some freshly baked mba management consultants sold this as strategy to attract a younger amount. Why the decision to imitate a diver is beyond me. The food is good.
I love this place and try to get here when i'm in town. Few restaurants have as unique a building as this one, with its open plaza interior. A cool evening, a little jazz, a great martini make a perfect night out. The seafood is extraordinary, particularly the shellfish and oysters. Steaks as well. Great salads and sides, which everything should be at these prices. I dont understand anyone going to a premium chain steakhouse when one can go to great independents like this.
