Backhouse Huntington Beach - Malibu

I think this place is overrated. The food was mediocre. Service was not worth taking about.

Service was slow even though it wasn’t very crowded. Two out of four rolls that we ordered were good. The roll with soft shell crab was ver disappointing. Price does not match the value.

My family and I were celebrating Father’s Day. We had come to this restaurant many times before and it was great. Sadly this last time the restaurant seem to be not very well kept. We had a reservation and when we got to our table it was dirty, the menus were soaked with water and it took them about 15 min to figure out who was going to be our server. The server said he was knew and he was doing the best he could but it seemed like he was not properly trained. He had a good attitude though. The food was good I think we enjoyed everything we had. We will not come back because the atmosphere of the restaurant it’s not being taken care of. It just looks like management does not care about the cleanliness and appearance of the restaurant. I hope they can fix things and improve their service.

We enjoyed the food and the views. We are locals and we will be back!

Don 't bother with this place. We had such high hopes. Lots of places at Pacific City have been amazing. What a let down. Couldn 't really hear any music. There was some liquor cabinets at the front that were pretty but after that, everything was a let down. We were put outside (not asked at all about our preference) in chairs (we specifically asked for a booth and they were available inside). The decor was sterile, almost medical. The clear barrier on our left looked out onto a backside of The Bungalow Bar, so a stinky view of used milk crates, pallets, and trash cans being walking by loudly. It had a wonderful janitorial feel. The table was dirty, but the view was nice. We hoped the food would make up for it. The guy working there had VERY obvious gang tattoos up his neck onto his face. He 's done some hard time and probably can 't get a job anywhere else. Unfortunately, it was WORSE. Grocery store sushi would 've been better. The rice wasn 't sushi rice. I may have been uncle ben 's or something but it wasn 't sticky, it was long grain and tasted like water. I ordered a spicy role... which WASN 'T spicy. Not even a little bit. It mostly tasted like stale watery rice and cucumber. The soy sauce was SO salty, it just made the roll worse. I 'm not even sure WHERE you can get soy sauce that bad, unless they tried to make it themselves and made it wrong. My husband and I wait all week for a date night. This was SUCH let down. It was depressing. We decided to end our dismal night on a high note, and walked down to BlueGold to try to turn this night around with a dessert and some actual ambiance and customer service. We told them we 'd had a bad experience. They said, Oh no, where? We told them, Backhouse. They said, Say no more. The good restaurants know about the BAD reputation Backhouse has. It 's more like OUTHOUSE. Just don 't waste your time or money going there. Many good places at Pacific City. NOT THIS ONE. AVOID IT.
