Traditional okonomiyaki and soba nudge. we came here at 1145 on a Wednesday and had luck finding space for 6 people on the tatami! very good service with English menu. the okonomiyaki was not lined with mayonnaise and other sauces, so was not too rich or salty. also the brownish noodles.
Eating was great and the atmosphere was even better. the owners are an older couple. they are super friendly and can speak English really well. eating was also great and we tried many meals. the price is around 700yen and a bein about 300yen. they also have beer and traditional Japanese alcohol. I tried highball and it was great. we had 2 koks, 1 beer, 1 highball and omonomiyaki, noodles, bark with garlic, omelette and roasted kartoffels with cheese. we paid about 3500, what I think is a really fairer price for really delicious eating while drinking alcohol in a really friendly atmosphere small restaurant.
We went there to a laune, and in typical tourist style we arrived half an hour before the open. they kindly asked us to wait patiently but welcomed us in 10 minutes early. they were very gracious and we were treated like guests in their house. we sat on a large table with the cooker ready to go (nice and warm on a cold night) where they offered us a menu with slightly English translations. the dame was friendly enough to guide us through the menu, and offer us their recommendations. eating is cooked before them and was entertaining to observe. they present the food for them immediately as it is cooked, so if they have hunger they should definitely order some pages. the baked mais and garlic butter potatoes we ordered were delicious and served torten hot, and I would have eaten slightly another portion. the yakisoba was great, the noodles had a beautiful, solid texture and the sauce was very tasteful. but the okonomiyaki stole the night, absolutely the best we ever had - we were devastated when it was over and we discussed ordering another, but regrettably decided not to be too greedy. a beautiful large bottle sapporo to enjoy the experience was the cherry top. the prices were extremely reasonable, cost us less than 5,000 yen (both: my wife just corrected me, was actually under 3000 yen) we have spent much more for much less during our stay here. would recommend anyone who visits kyoto, and we hope that we can do it again sometime.
Wonderful place with a very unique dining experience. They even adapted their dishes to vegans. We had fried noodles with vegetables, kimchi salad, fried eggplant in rice oil, fried asparagus and fried tofu. They have a collection of Belgium beers as well. This place is a must visit in Kyoto.
