Many standard items (burgers, pizza, etc. start frozen, not fresh, but specialties are freshly cooked: Chubby's Kalbi (Korean short ribs are the best in the city, they serve a delicious oxtail stew, and a Kalua Pig cabbage that brings us back again and again.
It all depends on what you're looking for. Chubby's is not really easy to find and you really need to want local good food without the imagination. Above all, it is in a bowling alley and the name of the restaurant is NOT outside. You need to know it's here. You see how it's in a bowling, forget to have a romantic conversation. Between the blade of bells in the arcade and the crash of pins and balls, it is best to keep your expectations low. However, it is a great place for families and hungry people. We separated a mixed dish of Teriyaki chicken and Kona pig and it was quite huge. It came with two bowls of rice, a large bowl of Tuna Mac and a replacement place so we could share. Good for $12. Your breakfast menu also looked very good, and I look forward to trying. Our server mentioned that the place is part of Big Island Grill, which I think is also quite good. This place is definitely to be found when you are away from the tourist restaurants and eat more like a local.
Pretty good food served at a bowling alley. Their fish and chips are delicious. Loved the adobo. Gonna try the oxtail soup the next time we eat there.
The hours of the restaurant is quite reliable. The portions of the food are pretty big and tasty. The stew with charsu fried rice was a definite winner. Definitely coming back!
Very cool place in Kona town. Looked for a place to get good cheap eats. Shouldn't go wrong with a name like Chubby's Diners, right? Wasn't disappointed and actually surprised. Didn't expect to find a big arcade, pool tables, hip bowling alley geared to all ages and families, and a nice big bar for adults to balance their time. And yes, the food was ono. Had a long line that quickly formed, but went down just as fast. The order takers were quick, courteous and pleasantly answered any questions we had. All the front of house workers, bowling desk, and cocktail server's seemed to enjoy what they do, regardless of the challenges nowadays. The food menu was huge and couldn't decide what to eat for dinner. Breakfast is served all day too. Plus, Plus! I ended up with kalbi and teri chix combo. Mac salad was ono too. Complimented with a $12.50 pitcher of Bud Light. Prices all the way around were very reasonable. Order came out pretty quick considering the line before us and the amount of takeouts they were doing. They bring the food and beer to your table for dine in. In all, we need more places like this, especiallyon Oahu. Way to go. Will definitely swing back when I'm on island again.
