I think this would have pretty good had it not been overcooked and it needed something to tie it together but no...... The only hot sauce they have is Texas Pete and for island themed food that just ain't going to cut it. Would like to try these guys again but I'll come prepared next time. BTW my tab tip for this sandwich was $18.50.
I saw that the Island Girl Seafood truck was nearby and I went over to see what they offered. Having been unfamiliar with them, I did a quick yelp search and reviewed their paper menu. I ended up ordering the coconut shrimp, which the person who took my order said was one of their specialties and I added on the coconut hush puppies. Given that they had a huge sign saying that their cheese balls were amazing, I grabbed an order the mozzarella ones as well. I must admit that I was a little confused as to why a seafood place was selling cheese balls...but, oh well, I love fried cheese. I was told that since I hadn 't placed my order online ahead of time, as I didn 't know that was an option, my order would take 52 minutes. I was given a time to return to the truck. Nearly an hour wait is a long time for truck food. I tend to think of food trucks as a great go-to for a quick meal. I mean, even an hour wait in a restaurant for food is a ridiculously long time. Nevertheless, I agreed and paid. My order was ready right on time! I was able to skip the line when I arrived back there and received their text and everything was correct when I checked the boxes before leaving. Nearly everything was also overly fried including the french fries which were dark in color, hard, and difficult to eat. The shrimp were large and nicely breaded and they had a good flavor to them. But the coconut hush puppies were burnt in places and had no appreciable seasoning or flavor aside from coconut pieces. I guess I was expecting the usual spices in a hush puppy with the addition of coconut. And the cheese balls were melted discs of breading around some of the cheese. They were still edible but not what was advertised. I remember trying a brie ball from Nomi 's Cheese Bar at Gastrofest years ago and what I got was much more successful back then (see pic). It looks like these companies have merged or perhaps they are the same folks?!?! The issues on the night that I went may have been because of the crowd or because their oil temperature was too high. I wish I had tried something that didn 't require a fryer to be able to better asses their flavors. This truck seems to have potential but I just didn 't have a great experience, particularly given the relatively high costs of the food.
For $24 including tax and tip..i got 4 overcooked tough shrimp on a huge pile of soggy fries. And brie balls were broken apart and cold. Never again
Don't waste your time ordering ahead. Placed an order via food truck pub app at 12:53 with a pickup time of 1:30pm (they were scheduled until 2:00pm). 1:30 rolled around and the food truck was gone. Clearly meaning the team overlooked the order confirmation they received or didn't bother checking the app all day. This was a major disappointment as I'm working an unusually long shift at work and have no lunch to eat now. Now I have to wait a couple business days for a refund. Probably won't give them a second chance after this.
Spent a small fortune at this food truck (bought 5 adult meals--mind you, they don't offer kids meals), and while some of it (my husband's haddock) was very good, I honestly can't say I'd ever go back. Had to go searching for the shrimp in my shrimp tacos (it was mostly mango and cabbage), and only 4 small shrimp to a platter in the coconut shrimp (sorry, but very dried out) and fried shrimp dinners! Plus, no tartar sauce was provided, so half our meals were eaten dry. The hush puppies and french fries were good, but the coconut rice was indistinguishable from plain white rice--we were scratching our heads on that one. And they were out of drinks, to boot! For what you spend to take out from this truck, you could find a nice little place to sit outside and get served. Just saying....
