The chip shop had a decent selection for a chippie, and on our first night I made the mistake of ordering a standard haddock and chips with mushy peas. The mushy peas were not from a tin, unlike some other places nowadays. There was too much food for me, as my 70-year-old appetite is not what it used to be. My son also enjoyed his meal, except for the last night when one of the potato cakes he ordered had very little potato in it, barely deserving to be called a slice. It seemed like it had been fried and then refried, as it was completely dried up. It was a shame because everything else was good.
Every time we have ben in there, the service is great, expect to wait a little while, everything is cooked fresh, and well worth it
I needed two smaller portions of fish and chips and knew Glossop Fish Bar provided these. It was a surprisingly quiet early Friday evening so I was served immediately, something I wasn 't used to. When I got the food home what a disappointment! Yes, the fish portion was small (what I had asked for) but the batter surrounding the fish was thick, tasteless, soggy and unpleasantly rubbery. My wife was unable to eat hers at all after one forkful. I was 'forced to ' as I had a very short time before leaving for an evening engagement and had no alternative food. Otherwise I would not have eaten mine either. The chips were not the best, and one can only speculate that the fish, at least, may have been left over from the lunchtime frying. I experienced stomach pain that night, which may, or may not, have been connected with the fish and chips. I must say that this was unrepresentative of previous purchases made there and that made the disappointment even more real.
Been in here a few times for a cone of chips on the way home. Chips were good, hot and fresh. Very traditional.
Having lived in Glossop for the best part of 40 years I 've concluded that GFB is indeed the best chippy in Glossop. After bobbing in randomly as a teenager for a chip butty, I 've now started to go in for fish and chips all 'round for the family when we feel like a chippy treat night. GFB is run by a very friendly husband and wife duo with hired help at busy periods. The chippy serves all the usual suspects for a traditional English chippy..i.e. haddock, cod, Pie 's, sausages, mushy peas etc. The chips are great. Proper chippy chips....not too greasy and cooked just great. The fish I 've always opted for is the Cod which is usually large and very good. Portions are usually slightly too big for one person which is always good! Small fish can also be bought for little ones. The only thing that stops a 5* rating, is that although the fish is very good....it 's just not quite as good as a coastal chippy where the fish is super fresh. That given, we always go here. Just check frying times before you go....not open at night....only open early evenings and lunch. The prices are as expected...no big surprises. A very good chippy to be recommended.
