Mercearia Da Carreira - Funchal

We had drinks at this restaurant and returned a few days later for food as the garden setting is lovely and a little quirky. However the food did not live up to the setting. We felt like we had been transported back to 1990s school dinners. 3 of us chose the set menu and one from the a la carte menu. The set menu was only €13.50 so we weren't expecting the best food but it really felt like the hot dishes we were eating were microwaved from frozen, and the spaghetti bolognese from the a la carte menu tasted like mince in watery gravy. I always find it telling if I go to a restaurant and I could make a better job of the food, not being the best cook myself. I think may be they are offering too wide a menu when they could be concentrating on a few dishes but doing them well. On the plus the waiter was fun.

Lovely tranquil garden for eating, friendly staff and a super fixed price menu. I ate here twice during a week stay in Funchal and would recommend it.

Easily missed lovely restaurant. The staff are very knowledgeable and welcoming. A very pleasant evening indeed. We'll return next week

Good food for a reasonable price. Do not expect fine cuisine.

Very good place and nice people. Food was very tasty and at a great price. I recommend going here instead of other overpriced touristy places
