Auberge du Tue Vaques - Fermanville

We were looking for somewhere to eat before catching the ferry home from Cherbourg and stumbled across the Auberge du Tue Vaques. We were waiting outside when they opened at 7pm and if you too have a ferry to catch and are at all nervous about missing it, I recommend that you arrive promptly as well. The auberge is run by a couple – she serves, he cooks. On the evening we were there, there were about 15 diners plus another calling in for a take-away pizza who all arrived within 30 minutes. It was a surprisingly (and very encouragingly) large number for a little restaurant away from a town and service was necessarily not the fastest. Even so, after a nervous wait, everything came out for everybody and with time to spare.And it was absolutely well worth the wait. The food is the sort of thing that we always used to find and delight in in local village restaurants throughout France. We chose to start with the excellent serve-yourself buffet – prawns, whelks, asparagus, salady bits and pieces and followed this with the best aile de raie I’ve had for a very long time. Many of the other diners went for steak or the dozen variations on moules-frites that certainly smelt excellent. Deserts included the normal suspects of crème brûlée, mousse au chocolat, îles flottantes . . .In summary, unpretentious, inexpensive and excellent, (and about 20mins from the ferry terminal).

This place is a must if you are in the area. We eat here a couple of times a year and it just keeps getting better. This auberge offers a fantastice insight to French village life and offers something for everyone. Simple value for money, with excellent service.

We ate twice as this restaurant and were very impressed. We found the service to be very attentive and friendly, the food was excellent and it was good value for money.

Plats de qualité relativement moyenne sauf les moules plutôt bonnes. Accueil et service très sympathiques.
