Ox184 - Edinburgh, City of

Really nice venue and good food with rather average service at a high price. We all had burgers which were OK and drinks but fort the money it was not that amazing!

Terrible customer service!! Never in my LIFE have I been made to feel so unwelcome in what is meant to be a ‘renowned establishment’, whenever I would talk to a member of staff whether that be to order food or drinks I was met with a look that can only be described as utter disgust. I have never EVER felt so belittled, I will never recommend this place to anyone visiting Edinburgh unless they’re in the mood to have a borderline panic attack due to being treated so unkindly!!

I went to OX184 for a birthday dinner with my wife and our mutual friends, seated on the top floor next to the open grill. The waitresses were delightful and the food was simple yet delicious; however one thing got in the way of our celebrations and turned the night into something very negative. It appears that a few chefs are unaware that customers can somewhat hear their conversations when the music is low and while trying to enjoy and celebrate our night, we could hear on multiple occasions, one female chef with cropped dark hair who appeared to be in charge discussing her coworkers in an extremely degrading and disrespectful way, referring to them as “useless” at times. Not only is this absolutely unprofessional and vile behaviour, but within earshot of customers is a level of flippancy i have truly never before witnessed. Very disappointed by the clear negative atmosphere behind the scenes and none of us will be returning!!

We made a reservation for a party of 18, but upon arrival, the table was only set for 14 so we had to move tables around to accommodate everyone. The serving staff were friendly, helpful, and competent. However, we were disappointed with the food. My salt and pepper squid starter arrived as squid rings with a batter that was not crispy and lacked salt and pepper seasoning. The half rack of ribs I ordered looked like a child's portion compared to the rib ends starters, which had more meat. Many in our group ordered burgers, but none of them were able to finish them as they were overcooked and dry. Overall, we found the food to be very disappointing for a grill restaurant.

My husband and I went here easy 5 years ago as a couple and loved it. So decided when back visiting Edinburgh with our kids we had to go back. Good grief major downhill! My son ordered the chicken goujons and they were black, greasy, crusty looking things. I had the halloumi salad looked liked a bag of leaves from Tesco with some crusty halloumi on top. Daughter had the nachos sloppy looking I think a Tesco heat up meal would have been better. Husband had a burger it seemed grand. Chips were nice and the staff lovely. But honestly so disappointing. I rarely leave terrible reviews but was so shocked at how much this place has changed! Also we visited at 515 and no one there (staff) so came back 15 mins later wish we hadn’t bothered. Should have stuck with Pizza Hut.
