Gustav Mahler Stube - DOBBIACO

We discovered this place on the recommendation of our hosts at Heidi's hotel and we were very happy with that advice. The restaurant is not open every night of the week, but fortunately we were there two nights , so we eat there the second night

Do you want to have dinner in the place where Gustav Mahler spent several summer holidays a hundred years ago, and composed The Song to the Earth and other music? And maybe visit what was his guest room upstairs, with his piano? Go no further that the Gustav Mahler Stube. In the German speaking Sud Tirol area of Northern Italy, on a lovely slope just off the main road, it might be difficult to find but it's worth the effort. The restaurant is family run and service kind, warm and professional; the menu offers typical local dishes and none will disappoint you. Fantastic food, low price, good choice of local wines. And the extra touch of Mahler's ghost, always present.

Very nice, great variety of farm animals and typical of the mountain areas, which you can also feed with the food made available by the staff. The race lasts a couple hours, if you do it quietly! We liked it!

We arrived at this restaurant without reservation, so we had to sit outside, since there was 1h waiting time for a table indoor. No problem, we were hungry, and the weather was good. We ordered, and it seemed very strange that the waitress asked us to pay right away, before anything was served. Seemed strange, but we did. The selection of dishes was not very large, but good enough. We ordered milaneses escalopes for the kids, which were very good, but for the adults we ordered what seemed to be roasted deer. The deer was dry and tasteless. And quite expensive too. But the very bad experience we had was not about the food, even if it was not to our taste. We had an awful time because of the wasps. There were lots of them coming to our table. The kids were afraid, and ended up eating their food standing 50m away from the restaurant. It was easy to understand why there were so many wasps: there was a wasp nest right above our table (see attached picture). You could see wasps going in and out of that place. I cannot understand how they can leave a wasp nest there, and keep the tables just below it. And not say a thing to the customers! Now I understand why they asked us to pay right when we ordered...

We had a variety of local typical food, fresh and home made, produce is local and the food very good and varied.
