My memories of licking salt off the back of my hand and the lingering flavors of the dishes stay with me. El Nivel is a newly opened bar and restaurant tucked away in the hidden streets of Covent Garden, located above La Perla. They specialize in agave spirits, cocktails, and Mexican tapas with a hint of Asian influence. Sitting at the bar, I began my evening with La Poderosa, followed by La Marquesa, Siesta, Herbalizer, Mezcal Fix, and finally the T.
Compared to its lively neighbor La Perla, El Nivel offers a more tranquil and imaginative dining experience. Chef Mauricio's culinary creations exceed all expectations, showcasing his talent as an artist. The expert mixologists craft cocktails with precision and skill, offering a menu of unique and flavorful options. We were also impressed by their knowledge of tequila, particularly the distinction between blue agave tequila and mezcal made from various agave plants. As owner Tomas Estes has emphasized, La Perla and El Nivel form a welcoming and close-knit family. 28 Maiden Lane has quickly become my go-to spot.
I recently visited El Nivel during London Cocktail Week, and unfortunately, it did not entirely meet my expectations. I went there during the iondon cocktail week as part of my self-tail tour. the menu sounded pretty good and I liked the sound of the LCW offer and it was really good. but for a Mexican bar it was quite unintentional. I had tried to book, but the booking system said it was full so we believed it. we got a place and being honest while there were many people there, it was never completely full all the time we were there. also with it more than half full, but it seemed quite calm and underwhelmed. In contrast to its up-beat and loud downstairs neighbour, La Perla, El Nivel is a bit more fancy and quiet. It is a gastronomical experience beyond any expectation, chef Mauricio is an artist. The cocktails are made by mixologists who know exactly what they are doing, so you can order off their menu or ask for something to be made! They are also very knowledgeable and we learned a lot about tequila (which is made of only Blue Agave, unlike the mezcal which can be made of a varitey of agave). La Perla and El Nivel is a family, as owner @tomasestes put it, and Maiden Lane is my favourite place to be.
