Passing on Angouleme, excellent cheap meal and don't pay mine I recommend
It 's rare to stumble upon an efficient, well run, enthusiastic eatery on the edge of a major supermarket, but Delices Charentais is a prime example. There are three parts to it a small bar (which does, unfortunately, tend to attract a shambling but relatively quiet clutch of derelicts and boozers), a takeaway counter like a mini Greggs and through a side door a small cafe/restaurant. That 's the place you should head if you 're after refreshment on a visit to the Intermarche supermarket on the outskirts of Angouleme. There 's also, just outside the supermarket car park, an excellent little boulangerie doing very good filled baguettes as well as fresh bread. Many Intermarche customers opt to buy their daily bread there, then top up at the supermarket. But, back to the restaurant. It 's family run, has a general air of jollity, they speak good English, and they serve an intriguing clutch of dishes quite unlike the usual mix in a small French cafe/restaurant. When we visited in January, the dish of the day brazenly in English was 'Irish stew '. It was then explained, in French underneath, that this entailed cooking beef in a beer sauce. Another dish of the day was Swiss tortilla, with fries, veg or salad. There are excellent cheaply priced 'formule ' combos of starters and mains and puds for around 10e, classic dishes including kebabs and fish n chips, plenty of salads for veggies, vegans and those just wanting a lighter snack, and a glass of wine for under 2e. We found the service good, the company excellent (much sparky interaction between the friendly diners at other tables) and the loos scrupulously clean a major contrast with the bogs that the Intermarche provides to its own customers, which border on the disgraceful. Highly recommended stopover for a light meal on the way to or from Calais.
